Why Tom Selleck Really ‘Didn't Like’ His Early Magnum P.I. Fame: ‘I Didn’t Always Succeed'

As a long-time admirer of Tom Selleck‘s work, it’s fascinating to hear about his journey through stardom and the challenges that came with it. His account of life during Magnum P.I.’s heyday offers an intriguing glimpse into the highs and lows of fame.

Tom Selleck is readying himself to bid farewell to “Blue Bloods,” a show returning for its final episodes in the 2024 TV schedule. However, he’s also taking a moment to reflect on his time spent on another significant series – “Magnum P.I.” Recently, Selleck confessed that he initially found the original script for the show to be terrible. Now, he’s being candid about his dislike for the fame he encountered during the early stages of the action series.

Before starring in Magnum P.I., Tom Selleck had already secured acting roles, but once he became part of this successful series, his life and career experienced a significant shift. In a recent interview on the “Where Everybody Knows Your Name” podcast with Ted Danson, Selleck revealed that he recognized the change in his life after filming just a few episodes of Magnum, which were delayed due to the 1980 SAG-AFTRA strike.

After the regular broadcast of the show, the seasoned actor openly discussed his feelings about it. It seems like the fame he recently acquired didn’t come without its challenges for him.

I didn’t like it, mainly because of family and a sense of privacy.

The drawback of being famous often includes a loss of privacy, yet even those in the entertainment world recognize this before achieving success. However, the pressures that come with public life can still be challenging. Consequently, numerous celebrities have been moving to quieter locations recently. For example, Tom Selleck, who owns a ranch for years, has found solace in escaping the chaos of Hollywood.

Apart from the challenge of protecting his personal life, Tom Selleck faced additional issues due to the rampant speculation about his private affairs during his early Magnum P.I. fame. As a result, he needed to exercise caution when participating in interviews.

In interviews, I encountered questions that I was uncomfortable answering. I responded by setting boundaries, suggesting, “Perhaps we should focus on discussing this specific topic.” I didn’t always manage to stick to these boundaries, but as time went on, they became more established. To this day, I find it challenging to fully articulate the reason behind them.

Despite the challenges, it appears that things weren’t entirely negative. The 79-year-old actor shared that he managed to find a sense of peace during the filming of the show in Hawaii. In fact, his real life started mirroring the art he was creating.

I didn’t deal with daily struggles because I owned a beautiful house in Hawaii, which was my first affordable home. I also joined the Outrigger Canoe Club, where the locals knew me as an actor. During that period when actors were on strike and couldn’t start filming, it felt like I was living the life of Magnum (a character from the show “Magnum P.I.”).

It must be tough balancing the pressures of being a celebrity and keeping a private life. Yet, it’s heartening to learn Tom Selleck found solace during his time on Magnum P.I.. One might assume he’s grown accustomed to being in the public eye, considering how gracefully he handles his fame.

At this point, it remains uncertain if Tom Selleck will retire following the end of Blue Bloods, since filming concluded during the summer. For now, there doesn’t appear to be any indication that he intends to do so. I’d be delighted if he were to take on another long-running series after his CBS procedural concludes. Regardless of what the future holds for him, I suspect he will rely on the knowledge and skills gained throughout his career to manage his celebrity life effectively.

Fans of Magnum P.I. can purchase episodes of the series through Amazon Prime Video. Meanwhile, don’t miss out on the final episodes of Blue Bloods, premiering on CBS starting October 18. In the interim, keep up-to-date with previous episodes by streaming them via a Paramount+ subscription.
