Considering the distinctive methods several Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) films employ to hint at future encounters between Spider-Man and Venom, I find it highly unlikely that we won’t witness their on-screen meeting or interaction before 2027. Venom is one of Spider-Man’s most significant adversaries, but can also be an ally under the right circumstances. Regarding their screen appearances, they have had relatively few interactions to date. However, despite Venom’s popularity as a character in general, these shared scenes on the big screen are quite scarce.
In “Spider-Man 3,” the portrayal of Venom’s origin and lore was unique yet controversial among viewers, as the symbiote shared screen time with multiple antagonists in the movie. The potential collaboration between Venom and Spider-Man, given the combined acting talent of Tom Hardy and Tom Holland, seemed promising in the Venom trilogy’s early stages. Regrettably, this anticipated team-up never materialized. However, the Marvel Cinematic Universe timeline now appears more primed for a meeting between Spider-Man and the Marvel symbiote than ever before.
Avengers: Secret Wars Makes The Concept Of Spider-Man’s Symbiote Story Happening More Likely Than Ever
The remaining piece of the Venom symbiote in the MCU after “Spider-Man: No Way Home” seems to hint at a possible future encounter or interaction between Tom Holland’s Spider-Man and the Venom symbiote, but this doesn’t necessarily mean that the MCU will explore this storyline immediately. The fact that threads like Scorpion’s teases from “Spider-Man: Homecoming” have been left unresolved for nearly a decade shows us that sometimes storylines can be delayed, especially when they involve characters or universes owned by Sony.
As the Marvel Cinematic Universe moves towards 2027’s “Avengers: Secret Wars,” which aligns with the adaptation of the same-named Marvel Comics stories, this decision to introduce Venom seems increasingly hard to overlook, given that Spider-Man’s black symbiote suit originated in the original Secret Wars comic. In this story, Peter Parker gains what appears to be an upgraded suit, unaware that it is actually a living alien entity. Consequently, “Avengers: Secret Wars” offers an ideal opportunity for the MCU to adapt this classic Spider-Man tale and officially introduce Venom into the franchise.
In the movie adaptation of Avengers: Secret Wars, they might decide to bypass some aspects of the original comic book storyline, given its blend of older and newer tales under the same title. However, disregarding a crucial part of the original narrative could seem somewhat wasteful. Considering the Avengers films aim to replicate the grandeur of Avengers: Endgame, it appears logical that Spider-Man, played by Tom Holland, and one of his iconic adversaries would have their first significant encounter. This is especially true given the existing background setting.
Now The Sony Spider-Man Universe Is Over, There’s Even More Reason For Venom To Enter The MCU Properly
It wasn’t hard to imagine Venom and Tom Holland’s Spider-Man clashing given that Venom traversed different universes in “Venom: Let There Be Carnage,” almost crossing paths with Peter Parker. However, due to the events of “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” Venom returned home without ever meeting Spider-Man face-to-face, which added complexity to the potential storyline by potentially merging the two universes more forcefully.
Currently, the idea of Spider-Man encountering Venom appears to be taking a new direction. After the release of “Kraven The Hunter” in 2024, it seems that the Sony Spider-Man Universe has reached its conclusion, with “Venom: The Last Dance” seeming to wrap up the antihero’s storyline, despite hinting at the symbiote surviving. Overall, the franchise’s other productions have struggled in both box office earnings and critical acclaim.
It appears there could be greater flexibility in weaving Spider-Man and Venom’s narratives together without confusion, by making Venom the main character of his own film series. An intriguing option might involve the Venom symbiote fragments influencing future Spider-Man events. This approach could serve as a tribute to the Venom trilogy and its origins, offering fans a sort of spiritual succession, while simultaneously paving a new direction for the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) that doesn’t require as tight a connection to the Sony Spider-Man Universe.
Spider-Man: No Way Home’s Ending Means Spider-Man Meeting The Venom Symbiote Would Mean Way More Now
No Way Home” could pave the way for Venom in future films due to remnants of the symbiote left over at the end and Peter Parker potentially encountering or being affected by it. Given that Peter has suffered immense loss and his support system is gone, the film ends on a melancholic note, hinting that Spider-Man’s life will only become more challenging in the future.
Placing Spider-Man’s narrative strategically sets up an encounter with the symbiote at a pivotal point in his MCU journey, one that maximizes emotional impact and allows audiences to comprehend any vulnerabilities he displays towards the symbiote as a result of the recent hardships he has faced. Additionally, since fewer individuals are privy to his dual identity and can perceive changes like the symbiote’s influence, this phase of Peter’s life provides a ripe opportunity for the Venom storyline to unfold convincingly.
Given the numerous interconnected plotlines within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), it’s possible that scheduling conflicts may prevent a meeting between Spider-Man and Venom from happening as anticipated. However, considering Spider-Man’s significant popularity and financial success within the franchise, it would be advantageous to prioritize his storyline. Such an approach could also contribute to the development of the MCU’s overarching Multiverse Saga.
