The chilling reality is that winter is indeed approaching in 1923, and it’s something we should all take very seriously. I’m not mincing words here. The upcoming season will see ruthless individuals attempting to harm the Dutton family, a danger that will undoubtedly escalate and potentially grow more intense. However, it’s crucial to remember the threats that the family is battling against the harsh winter conditions as well. Frankly, the raw power and unpredictability of winter can be far more terrifying than any adversary they might encounter.
Indeed, Season 2 will introduce both the powerful and land-grabbing businessman Donald Whitfield, along with the malevolent Father Renaud and other abusive clergy members. These characters indeed pose significant challenges. However, winter could be just as much a villain in this series, if not more so. The cast emphasized this point in a behind-the-scenes video for 1923, with Helen Mirren stating:
It’s a particularly awful winter that they’re going through.
Following Harrison Ford’s observation of a significant danger to their location, they have discussed the extreme difficulties of filming “1923” due to the harsh conditions, even in contemporary times. Imagine how severe winter would be during the 1920s, making it an even greater challenge.
Let me emphasize further that winter is likely to pose significant difficulties this year. Here’s how the cast of 1923 described the obstacles posed by the weather:
To drive home the idea that we should prepare ourselves for some serious winter troubles this season, I wanted to share what the cast of 1923 had to say about the challenges they faced due to the harsh weather conditions.
- “Just the elements, being able to keep up and feed themselves, and keep everything moving.” -Brandon Sklenar
- “It’s just the reality of this world and trying to survive.” -Darren Mann
- “Living in Montana in 1923, they are living on the physical edge, constantly.” -Helen Mirren
- “There’s a storm a coming and we know it. There’s nature and mankind, and if nature won’t get you, mankind will.” – Harridon Ford
If you’ve seen “1883”, you’ll agree it carries a more intense impact than “Yellowstone”. This is due to the life-threatening difficulties nature presents. Tasks like crossing a river or being stranded in harsh weather conditions, while manageable today, were potentially lethal during that era (and indeed took lives on occasion).

After long wait, I finally had a chance to watch 1923, and it turned out that one of the reasons I find myself so drawn to it is because it addresses an issue I’ve had with Yellowstone.
Additionally, concerning the year 1883, it’s important to remember what led to Margaret Dutton’s demise. Despite enduring the long journey by wagon to Montana, she eventually succumbed to the cold and froze to death, leaving her sons, Spencer and John, behind.
Although human dangers may be frightening, I find the unpredictability of nature even more terrifying. These characters lack the ability to control the elements, such as winter weather, which poses a significant survival challenge for them and their animals. The cold could lead to freezing temperatures for both them and their animals. Moreover, their constant preoccupation with surviving the harsh weather leaves less energy for confronting their opponents directly.
In actuality and especially during contemporary Montana winters, one doesn’t joke around. This is why the last episodes of Yellowstone were filmed in spring instead of winter due to the harshness of the weather. Given that 1923 is set in such a frigid season, it implies the Duttons are heading for a perilous and cold journey. Adding to their troubles are the various other threats they’re already dealing with.
Fundamentally, I’m conveying that winter should never be taken lightly, especially for those lacking today’s modern survival tools. As we gear up to stream Season 2 with our Paramount+ subscriptions, let’s remember the frosty perils ahead and prepare ourselves for a chilly, challenging chapter in the upcoming Yellowstone series.
