As someone who has spent countless hours immersed in the vibrant world of cinema, I must say that this year’s National Board of Review winners have left me quite intrigued and excited! With my years of experience as a movie enthusiast, I can confidently say that these awards truly reflect the essence of cinematic artistry.
The competition for awards is heating up, with “Wicked” now in the running following a significant victory from the National Board of Review. This organization, based in New York City, is a non-profit group made up of movie enthusiasts. Films endorsed by them often receive recognition, particularly at the Academy Awards, where they are frequently nominated for Best Picture. In recent years, winners of the Best Film award from this organization include “Killers of the Flower Moon”, “Top Gun: Maverick”, and “Licorice Pizza” – all of which were subsequently nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars.
According to IndieWire, the National Board of Review declared “Wicked” as the outstanding film of 2024. The organization additionally recognized Jon M. Chu for his exceptional directing skills and granted a special honor to the dynamic duo of stars, Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande. In the words of NBR president Annie Schulhof, “Wicked encapsulates the enchanting power that films can have on viewers. Every element is meticulously created and executed, the performances are all captivating, and the music is incomparable — collectively, it results in an immersive journey unlike any other. The NBR takes great pleasure in acknowledging director John M. Chu and his visionary work in cinema.
In this year’s acting awards, Daniel Craig took home the prize for Best Actor in “Queer”, Nicole Kidman won for Best Actress in “Babygirl”, Kieran Culkin received recognition as Best Supporting Actor in “A Real Pain”, and Elle Fanning was honored as Best Supporting Actress in “A Complete Unknown”. Something Wicked This Way Comes
In the early stages of Awards Season, “Wicked” has emerged as a front-runner, having won prestigious awards such as The Gotham Awards and The New York Film Critics Circle Award. Meanwhile, “A Different Man” and “The Brutalist” also claimed victories at these events. Add to that the Palm d’Or won by “Anora” at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this year, and the competition is starting to intensify. As the announcement of Golden Globe nominations on Dec 9, 2024, draws near, “Wicked” seems to be a strong contender for the Best Comedy or Musical category, and possibly even the top prize. Similar to other critically acclaimed blockbusters like “Dune”, “Mad Max: Fury Road”, “Avatar: The Way of Water”, “Black Panther”, and “Top Gun: Maverick”, “Wicked” looks set to vie for a Best Picture nomination, but it faces a tough battle on its way to claiming the top honor.
There are a few interesting tidbits from the National Board of Review winners. Three of the movies The National Board of Review listed in their Top 10 Independent Films — Thelma, Love Lies Bleeding, and My Old Ass — also made MovieWeb’s 10 Most Underrated Movies of 2024. Dune: Part Two is also worth mentioning, as it wasn’t named among the year’s top films. The beloved sci-fi sequel failed to make a splash and was overlooked in The Best Films of 2024 for another Warner Bros. continuation of a past Oscar nominee, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga. Movies like Challengers, Emilia Pérez, and I Saw the TV Glow are other notable critical favorites that failed to make the cut for The National Board of Review.
