Wicked
As a long-time enthusiast of musical theater, I must say that Wicked has truly enchanted me! Having seen countless productions, both on stage and screen, this cinematic adaptation stands out as an exceptional immersive experience. The set design is nothing short of breathtaking, transporting us directly into the magical land of Oz, making us feel like we’ve stepped right into a storybook.
Title Date & Creative Team: Wicked – Set to release on November 22, 2024; Directed by Jon M. Chu, written by Winnie Holzman and Dana Fox
From the very start, I had a feeling I’d adore the “Wicked” film, yet I was surprised by just how much I ended up loving it. As a fan who appreciates both the initial stage production and Jon M. Chu’s past works such as “Crazy Rich Asians” and “In the Heights,” I felt confident that this project was in capable hands. Moreover, Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo seemed like perfect choices for their roles. To my delight, all of these assumptions proved correct. Not only does it stand out among this year’s films, but it also has the potential to be ranked as one of the finest modern movie musical adaptations.
In the opening segment, titled “Wicked,” we delve into the early stages of the two-part musical production. Here, we find ourselves at Shiz University where characters Glinda (portrayed by Ariana Grande) and Elphaba (Cynthia Erivo) are compelled to share a dorm room. As the narrative unfolds, we witness the blossoming of a profound friendship between these two ladies. This bond will prove crucial in understanding how Elphaba eventually transforms into the infamous Wicked Witch of the West.
In essence, this is a heartwarming tale emphasizing themes such as acceptance, personal power, camaraderie, and the idea that everyone should have the opportunity to soar. Additionally, it’s clear that the story has been lovingly crafted and nurtured with an abundance of affection, which makes for a truly contagious reading experience.
Cynthia Erivo And Ariana Grande Balance Each Other With Pitch Perfect And Powerful Performances
Before watching the musical “Wicked”, I’ve often heard Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo discuss how harmoniously their voices blend when they sing, and let me assure you, it’s nothing short of divine when they perform together. But what truly impresses is not just their singing, it’s their acting prowess as well. They seem destined to portray Elphaba and Glinda on stage, and their performances complement and contrast each other beautifully.
As soon as I learned Ariana Grande had been chosen to play Glinda, I felt we were in store for something extraordinary. Given her love for theater and her avid fandom of “Wicked”, I had high expectations. These qualities shine brilliantly in this film, where she portrays the good witch with both humor and sincerity.
The scene that comes to mind that demonstrates all this is the opening number, “No One Mourns The Wicked.” The scene where she’s speaking with the Munchkins is hilarious, but it’s quickly put into question as you see the nuanced emotions Glinda is trying to hide as she talks about Elphaba. Then, she sings, and hearing Grande hit those operatic notes is breathtaking. From there, she thrives as the pinkified lady, and that’s in part thanks to her fellow witch played by Cynthia Erivo.
At the screening I recently attended, Cynthia Erivo’s performance was truly a standout, earning two rounds of applause. When she began to sing “The Wizard and I,” I felt a shiver run down my spine. Throughout the performance, her vocal skills were nothing short of amazing as she conveyed Elphaba’s deepest desires and aspirations. As the story progresses, we watch her grow into her power, and by the end, when she sings “Defying Gravity,” she has transformed into a strong-willed witch with determination in her eyes.
Erivo plays Elphaba with so much power, and she absolutely soars in this role.
Just as perfectly, so they harmonize – these two. Their impeccable comic rhythm, the seamless blend of their voices, and the dedication to cultivate a profound sisterhood throughout the film make them an unparalleled duo that captures your heart.
To make the play “Wicked” successful, it requires two actresses capable of embodying Elphaba and Glinda. However, what’s even more crucial is finding two actresses who complement each other in the same way these characters do. Fortunately, Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande have done just that by delivering a balanced performance.
Jon M. Chu And Christopher Scott’s Musical Numbers Show The Power Of Great Choreography
The duo of Director Jon M. Chu and Choreographer Christopher Scott is like a harmonious union straight from heaven. They’ve collaborated for quite some time, with both of them, along with cinematographer Alice Brooks, contributing their skills to the movie musical “In The Heights”. Therefore, with Scott handling the choreography, Chu directing, and Brooks capturing it all on camera, we are treated to a film brimming with beautifully executed musical scenes.
Few or even many musical films struggle to pull this off effectively, but when it’s executed purposefully and sensitively, it’s enchanting and can elevate a movie to greatness.
In the musical “Wicked,” there are numerous large-scale musical performances. For instance, consider the number “Dancing Through Life.” This scene features Jonathan Bailey’s character Fiyero dancing with all the students within the library, and later, Elphaba takes center stage during the Ozdust Ballroom sequence. Throughout these scenes, you’ll find grand, sweeping shots of the entire cast moving in unison.
Just as the enchantment of witches heightens the delight of a magical story, the grandeur of these colossal figures in the captivating sets amplifies the whimsical excitement of this movie, making it all the more spellbinding. It’s essential for creating this mesmerizing effect.
In the movie “Dancing Through Life,” focusing on Bailey’s close-ups reveals his captivating charm, creating an intimate connection that can’t be replicated in a live performance setting. On the other hand, wide shots of the entire cast dancing and whirling around the library let us witness the collective adoration for Fiyero while immersing us in the energy generated by a large group moving synchronously, much like experiencing a live stage show. The choreography significantly enhances the narrative in Wicked, and when combined with skillful cinematography and direction, it results in a magical experience.
As I dive headfirst into the vibrant world of Chu’s creations, tracks like “Dancing Through Life,” “What Is This Feeling,” and “One Short Day” serve as my guide. Each tune not only paints a vivid picture of the scenes but also offers a glimpse into the characters’ minds. Moreover, these masterpieces showcase the captivating power and elegance that lies within exceptional dance moves.
Wicked Isn’t Just A Movie, It’s An Immersive Experience Thanks To Incredible Set Design And An Ensemble Cast Who Feels Like They Came Directly From Oz
Similar to how the movie “The Wizard of Oz” immerses you in its enchanting realm, the musical “Wicked” does the same using authentic sets. The performers seem as if they’ve dwelled in this fantastical landscape all their lives. In essence, these stunning and lifelike sets served as a playground for the actors to excel and completely embody the characters that populate this magical universe.
The ensemble of Jonathan Bailey gracefully moving about Shiz University, as if he’s a genuine prince from Winkie Country, and Michelle Yeoh dominating each space she occupies as Madame Morrible – the entire cast seems to perform without any strain. Once you witness them on these extraordinary sets, they shed their actor personas and convincingly embody their characters.
For Grande and Erivo, the performance of “Popular” is particularly noteworthy. In their shared space, which is predominantly pink as Glinda’s and Elphaba’s room, Grande exudes an air of ownership as she navigates it with fluidity. Throughout this number, as she metamorphoses Elphaba, she gracefully handles her possessions, even humorously employing props such as her wand to request a ballgown, showcasing her skill. These environments serve as playgrounds, enabling this exceptional ensemble to flourish and undergo remarkable transformations.
All in all, “Wicked” stands out as a remarkable achievement. It skillfully expands on its original material and infuses it with cinematic enchantment, elevating an already exceptional musical experience. In the wake of its release, I believe it’s destined to be recognized among the greatest musicals ever made, largely due to the immense dedication, devotion, and craftsmanship demonstrated by the cast and crew in bringing this captivating tale to life.
