'Wicked' Sets New Record With $114 Million USD in Opening Weekend Box Office

As a seasoned gamer who’s spent countless hours in the cinematic universe, I must say, the box office race this year is reminiscent of a high-stakes battle royale! The debut of Jon M. Chu’s Wicked has truly swept me off my feet, earning an impressive $164.2 million USD globally in just its opening weekend! It’s not every day we see a Broadway adaptation break records and claim the crown for the biggest global opening for a film adaptation of a musical.

Jon M. Chu’s “Wicked” is soaring to the top of the box office after making a staggering $114 million USD in sales across 3,888 North American cinemas during its debut weekend.

As a devoted movie enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that according to Variety, “Wicked” has smashed the domestic record for the best opening for a Broadway-to-film adaptation, outperforming “Into the Woods” which grossed $31 million USD in 2014. This impressive debut places it as the third-largest domestic opening of 2024, trailing only behind “Deadpool & Wolverine” and “Inside Out 2”. What’s more, “Wicked” is the fourth-biggest opener for a musical ever. The film also raked in an additional $50.2 million USD at the international box office, boosting its global total to a staggering $164.2 million USD – making it the largest global opening for a film adaptation of a Broadway musical and surpassing the record set by “Les Miserables” in 2012.

According to David A. Gross of Franchise Entertainment Research, it’s an unstoppable force. The audience is personalizing the singing and costume events.

Right under Chu’s “Wicked” is the sequel to Ridley Scott’s “Gladiator II”. This sequel had a lower-than-expected opening with $55.5 million USD from 3,573 North American theaters over the weekend. However, overseas, the movie has already earned $221 million USD.
