As a former theater kid who spent countless hours perfecting my rendition of “Defying Gravity,” I can’t contain my excitement about Universal Pictures’ decision to have sing-a-long screenings of Wicked this holiday season! The thought of belting out those iconic tunes alongside fellow musical enthusiasts is truly magical.
That sound you just heard? The sound of thirty million current-and-recovering theater kids clearing their throats with glee. Because (of course) Universal Pictures has announced that they will be doing sing-a-long style screenings of Wicked this holiday season.
According to a special report by Rebecca Rubin for Variety, it has been announced that selected cinemas and theatres nationwide will invite audiences to join in singing and belting out the iconic songs from the Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo-led big screen adaptation of the popular Broadway musical starting December 25.
As a cinema enthusiast, let me express my frustration on behalf of the 30 million current-and-recovering theater kids out there. We’ve been eagerly awaiting the chance to scream-sing along to that one powerful note in “Defying Gravity” since the movie’s initial release date on November 22. Unfortunately, it looks like we’ll have to wait more than a month before we can belt it out.
Some theater enthusiasts might be feeling a sense of liberation as they now have extra time to perfect that one challenging note in “Defying Gravity,” hoping to genuinely astound their peers with their performance. Yet, they aim to make it seem effortless, just like the character Elphaba would. After all, certain individuals possess a natural four-octave range, and it’s been a while since they’ve given a vocal workout! Oh, joy!
What Is ‘Wicked’ And Is The Writer Of This Story Okay Or…?
If you happen to be reading this but haven’t been impacted by the news, let me tell you about “Wicked.” It’s a spectacular, imaginative cinematic adaptation of the worldwide hit musical with the same name. It’s especially cherished by those who were once (or still are) theater enthusiasts with a knack for subtle aggression, eagerly waiting to take center stage just like Lea Michele!
Under the guidance of director Jon M. Chu, with a script penned by Winnie Holzman (co-writer of the Broadway musical’s book along with Stephen Schwartz and Dana Fox), the movie Wicked delves into the initial tale of Elphaba, also recognized as The Wicked Witch of the West from the Land of Oz. This character is derived from L. Frank Baum’s creation that introduced us to the world of The Wizard of Oz. In this film, Cynthia Erivo portrays Elphaba, while Ariana Grande is cast as Glinda the Good Witch, with their unusual bond forming during their time as students at Shiz University.
Just Some ‘Wicked’ Photos, Nothing More, Nothing Less
The movie adaptation has been divided into two segments, and the second part is scheduled to premiere exactly one year from now on November 21, 2025. This news will undoubtedly excite theater enthusiasts who might have missed their chance to shine during this year’s group performances at the cinema. (A lot can change in a year, Jessica! Remember, singing is also about strength!)
It’s reasonable to presume that there will be more karaoke versions of the second installment of Wicked, as this format has been popularized by recent films like Bohemian Rhapsody, The Greatest Showman, and even the South Park movie. So, it’s clear that singing along is not exclusive to theater kids anymore!
Let’s find out if other audience members at the “Wicked” sing-along performances enjoy watching a big crowd enacting their Broadway dreams. One might wonder, although they are well-liked, will they become extremely popular?
