As a long-time Star Wars fan who has seen my fair share of ups and downs with the franchise, I must admit that the launch of Star Wars Outlaws left me underwhelmed. However, as someone who has patiently waited for a decent Star Wars action-adventure game since Knights of the Old Republic, I am cautiously optimistic about the Wild Card DLC and upcoming patches.
Ubisoft had high hopes for the debut of Star Wars Outlaws, yet, even with all the effort invested in the game, the launch fell short of expectations.
Regardless, there’s still hope for Massive Entertainment’s team to salvage their game in the upcoming months. They’ve recently launched the Wild Card DLC, introducing the beloved character Lando Calrissian. Therefore, here’s a look at what players might anticipate from this expansion.
Wild Card Launches
As a devoted fan, I’ve always admired how Kay Vess navigates the game, often dashing here and there on assignments for various syndicates. Yet, this latest “Wild Card” mission stands out as something extraordinary because it finds Kay in an unprecedented situation – she’s been maneuvered into working for an Imperial, specifically, to infiltrate a high-stakes Sabbac game under duress.
It transpires that the Imperials compel Kay to undertake this mission, as rejecting it would lead to her becoming targeted by syndicates and having a bounty placed on her head. So, she embarks on this game, and who else does she encounter but the notorious gambler Lando Calrissian?
The trailer hints at Lando and Kay escaping together, but the plot beyond that remains uncertain. Given Lando’s high rank as a general in Return of the Jedi, it’s plausible that this tale could offer insights into how Lando eventually became part of the Rebellion and contributed to the Battle of Endor, bridging gaps in our understanding of his journey.
Star Wars Outlaws Patch 1.4
In addition to introducing the Wild Card DLC, numerous game updates have been included to address initial player feedback. One significant modification is the adjustment of the difficulty level for stealth missions. Now, if a player stumbles during the stealth aspect of a mission, it won’t automatically result in failure. Instead, players will be granted the option to either continue with stealth or opt for an all-out action approach.
Improvements have been incorporated into the artificial intelligence of enemies, character movements such as crouching, and the diversity of firearms, aiming to deliver a smoother gaming experience overall. Additionally, the behavior of non-player characters has been refined to make interactions with them feel more authentic.

This is Where the Fun Begins
As a devoted fan, it’s no secret that Star Wars Outlaws didn’t leave gamers spellbound at its debut. Despite shifting over a million units off the shelves, Ubisoft was anticipating significantly higher numbers for their investment in a top-tier, licensed AAA game based on such a renowned franchise.
At this juncture, Massive Entertainment faces the challenge of re-engaging the audience for their show Outlaws. It won’t be a walk in the park, but it’s not an impossible feat. For instance, Star Wars Battlefront II initially had a rocky launch, yet they managed to win back players with top-notch (and free) DLC. As a non-Star Wars example, CDPR recovered from the less than stellar debut of Cyberpunk 2077, but they also had the acclaimed series Cyberpunk: Edgerunners to help promote Night City and improve its image.
Will Outlaws manage to get out of this particular Sarlacc Pit? Time will tell.
Star Wars Outlaws is now available for Xbox X|S, PS5, and PC.
