Wild rumours claim The Sims 5 has been cancelled

As a long-time Sims player and avid follower of gaming news, I’ve grown up with The Sims franchise being a constant presence in my virtual life. The thought that The Sims 5 might be cancelled is like hearing the saddest of rumors for me.

The simulation might have reached its end, based on some buzz around the gaming community recently. Not many game series from Electronic Arts can rival The Sims’ accomplishments, including EA Sports FC (previously known as FIFA).

Twenty-four years have passed since we initially added a Tragic Clown artwork, removed swimming pool stairs, and employed the Rosebud trick for endless Simoleons in The Sims game. Yet, The Sims name continues to thrive. Some criticize Electronic Arts (EA) for overexploiting The Sims 4, while others are content with it serving as a bridge until The Sims 5 emerges.

Rumours claim The Sims 5 could be in trouble

According to SimmerBerkay, who is a LinkedIn user, an ex-employee’s profile suggests that “The Sims 5” has been scrapped. However, it’s important to note that Electronic Arts (EA) hasn’t formally acknowledged their next Sims game as “The Sims 5.” We’ll delve deeper into that point later on.

LinkedIn states that they held the role of Lead Character Artist at Maxis up until Spring 2024, reportedly contributing to the development of The Sims 5 for PS5. However, it seems that project has been called off as per LinkedIn’s announcement. There’s a faint possibility that Maxis is working on a new installment in the series named “Project Rene,” described as the “next generation” of The Sims.

There’s a lot of talk among fans, who come up with plausible theories. In response to SimmerBerkay’s comment, one skeptic proposed, “Rene hasn’t been cancelled yet, as they are still hiring staff for it. It might be that a PS5 version was being developed instead, but has since been abandoned.”

The OP points to a slew of layoffs at Maxis as a possible cause, but ultimately concludes, “I think the sims 5 project turned into the rene project.” As Project Rene has been recruiting playtesters, it seems to still be alive and kicking, but remember, it was never described as a full sequel to The Sims 4. Even we’ve been guilty of referring to Project Rene as The Sims 5

If The Sims 5, which was hypothesized to be under development using Unreal Engine 5, had been cancelled instead, it would come as a significant disappointment to the dedicated fanbase of The Sims. Regardless of how much enjoyment is currently derived from The Sims 4 and its expansions, there exists the uncertainty regarding when The Sims 4 will eventually reach its end. At this point, no official communication has been received, but if we were Electronic Arts (EA), we would aim to put an end to this disheartening rumor as soon as possible.
