Vikramaditya Motwane’s latest directorial release, CTRL starring Ananya Panday, is creating quite a stir on Netflix. The film’s creator recently expressed thoughts about potential sequels and revealed an interesting tidbit: the original ending he drafted was different from what we see now. He admitted that Nella’s vengeful conclusion didn’t fit well with the storyline, especially considering the limitations of the screenlife format, leading him to revise his plans.
According to Hindustan Times, when asked about the potential for a sequel where Nella takes revenge and possibly without the screenlife format, director Vikramaditya Motwane expressed uncertainty. He stated, “Perhaps. I’m not sure. I’m skeptical about a sequel. In my opinion, Nella is destined to suffer; she’s fallen into that rabbit hole again.” Vikramaditya prefers for CTRL to serve as a warning rather than transforming it into a story centered around revenge.
Initially, Vikramaditya considered a new direction for the movie’s conclusion, in which Nella’s storyline took a vengeful path. In the initial draft, she was determined to seek revenge, but the sheer scale of the antagonist she encountered forced a tough decision: either adhere to the screenlife format or transition to a more conventional ending.
He shared that it became clear that incorporating such a dramatic shift wouldn’t fit naturally into the story’s structure, especially with the limitations of the format. He said, “That’s the moment we realised, why would anyone in that right mind stream this or shoot this, what would be the screenlife element? So very quickly, that went out of the window.”
Initially, the director had a definite plan for the movie, intending it to be a collective effort. He attributes a large part of the film’s realism to Sumukhi Suresh, who crafted the dialogues, and Ananya Panday, who breathed life into the narrative. To avoid imposing his perspective on the internet-savvy generation of young adults, Vikramaditya was eager not to prescribe how characters in their 20s should interact online.
Rather than trying to navigate the digital world himself, he shrewdly enlisted talented individuals who helped make the movie relevant for today’s tech-savvy audience. In his opinion, this cooperative approach contributed significantly to the film’s contemporary feel.
When creating the secondary main character in the film, Allen – the Artificial Intelligence avatar that Ananya Panday’s character Nella communicates with – Vikramaditya chose to deviate from the typical AI representations seen in films like Her and Ex Machina. Rather than designing an exclusive AI with a unique artistic perspective, he preferred a more familiar, mass-produced model.
