caution: Episode 16 of Chicago P.D.’s current season, titled “Seen and Unseen,” is now streaming exclusively on Peacock. Enjoy!
In the 2025 TV schedule, I found myself drawn to the storyline of Burgess in “Seen and Unseen” from Chicago P.D. As a newly-minted detective, she juggled her professional responsibilities with a challenging murder case, wedding planning, and parenthood alongside Ruzek, all while Makayla was part of the picture. To make matters even more complex, the case hinged on Burgess’ memory since it took place in a diner she often visited, adding even more weight to her already burdened shoulders.
Luckily, despite the tension, the ship Burzek didn’t face significant disruption for an extended period, and just before the end, its captain gained a valuable insight into what truly mattered in life.
Burgess And Ruzek Are Planning Their Wedding
In Season 12, Chicago P.D. didn’t focus much on wedding planning, indicating that Burgess and Ruzek won’t be eloping like Upstead did a few seasons back. The episode “Seen and Unseen” provided the first in-depth look at their wedding preparations. Off-screen, their wedding planner is likely quite busy while Kim and Adam are handling weekly crime investigations. In “Seen and Unseen,” the problem that affected both their personal and professional lives was the guest list, with Adam organizing about 80 guests, while Kim struggled to prioritize hers.
As the episode progressed, it appeared as though additional challenges were cropping up one after another for the characters. Beyond dealing with their wedding preparations, they had issues like a leaking roof, Ruzek’s father’s illness, Burgess being overwhelmed at work, and Makayla facing academic difficulties. Their frequent arguments made me concerned that “Seen and Unseen” might conclude on a tense note.
Later on, Burgess reached her limit following a conversation with Deputy Chief Reid, who consistently posed issues for Intelligence and demanded extra paperwork from her. In my opinion, things didn’t seem promising for her to enjoy a peaceful home life in the closing moments of the episode. Occasionally, it can be gratifying to turn out to be mistaken!

Burgess Realized What Matters Most
As Burgess settled in at her computer for another round of paperwork, memories of her interactions with Ruzek from the episode surfaced, making her aware that she had been overlooking their relationship and failing to appreciate the efforts he’d been putting into his work while she was engrossed in her report.
In an interesting twist, Chicago P.D. revisited some scenes from earlier in the show, offering slightly varied perspectives to reveal Burgess recognizing details she’d overlooked initially. This newfound awareness led her to a heartwarming surprise for her fiancé: arranging a weekend getaway at the luxurious downtown Chicago Langham hotel, and sharing this exciting news with an endearing speech.
Essentially, what I’m trying to convey is that we’re arranging our wedding, preparing for the marriage, and I’ve recently been promoted to detective status. I don’t want the memories of this time in my life to be dominated by stress. Our lives… They’re manageable. Most things are in order. It’s just life. We’re coping well. You and I, we’re doing great, but I don’t want to overlook moments, as it feels like I might be missing out on them.
After twelve seasons, Burzek stands out as Chicago’s most effective communicating couple in my opinion! Ruzek seemed touched by her words, and the episode ended with them eagerly beginning what Ruzek playfully called their “spicy weekend.” Their wedding is scheduled, their future together remains optimistic, and even if something unexpected happens on their big day – as I suspect it might – it doesn’t necessarily mean a tragic end to their story.

Why I Think The BIG Wedding Might Not Happen
As a passionate cinephile, I’m thrilled to share that my suspicions about Burgess and Ruzek walking down the aisle with a grand ceremony are not rooted in fears of cold feet, arguments tearing them apart, or Voight causing relationship turmoil like he did with Upton and Halstead. (Trust me, I’ve moved on from that incident, no lingering resentment whatsoever!)
When I say “the big wedding might not happen,” I’m referring to the possibility that they might not be able to have their dream wedding, not because of relationship issues or external factors, but perhaps due to unforeseen circumstances beyond their control. After all, life in the city is full of twists and turns!
It seems the guest list has reached 120, causing Ruzek to inform Burgess that the planner announced it’s impossible to accommodate so many people in the backyard, leading them to make tough decisions about who to invite. Adding to the chaos typical of the One Chicago universe, complications are expected at this wedding. The latest nuptials on Chicago Fire were those of Stellaride and Brettsey; due to venue issues, Stellaride’s wedding took place on a boat, while Brettsey’s was held in a fish store after waiting an extended period for a suitable location.
Chicago Med’s Ethan and April had a beautiful church wedding, which could partly be because Brian Tee left the show and this provided a nice farewell with Yaya DaCosta returning. However, the Manstead wedding didn’t make it to the altar on Chicago Fire! As for Upstead on Chicago P.D., their chances of a happy ending seem slim, unless they reunite off-screen after their divorce.
To put it simply, it seems unlikely that the Burzek wedding will unfold as they had envisioned, with a large guest list of over 100 people, as things may not go as planned.

Why I Think A Wedding Will Happen
I do think that the knot will be tied before the credits roll on Season 12, though. Marina Squerciati shared that she was “stupidly excited” trying on wedding dresses for the show, and a recent set of photos on her Instagram page include a wedding invitation listing the ceremony as “May 25, 2025 AT 3 O’CLOCK IN THE AFTERNOON.” The actress was also still sharing pics of wedding gowns as recently as a few weeks ago:

On March 26, during the live broadcast of her major episode, Squerciati posted on X (previously known as Twitter) that she was “still on set with Paddy filming the finale.” This suggests they might have been shooting a joyful conclusion for the finale at the exact moment when “Seen and Unseen” was airing on NBC. However, it’s not definitive that they were filming a happy ending at that precise instant. Still, I have a positive feeling that Burzek (Characters Jamie Squerciati plays and Patrick John Flueger) will have some kind of wedding, considering the health condition of Ruzek’s father. Even if their carefully planned moments get disrupted, it seems unlikely they would postpone the event given the urgency of the situation.
Additionally, under the assumption that all essential arrangements are in place, it becomes exciting to ponder who will be invited to the event. Disco Bob is expected to join us, and I’ve been contemplating if Adam’s sister could possibly attend. It would be great if Burgess could bring some family along, and naturally, numerous characters from One Chicago might find themselves on people’s wish lists as potential wedding guests.
Absolutely, wrapping up filming on finale scenes for the cast doesn’t imply that NBC has exhausted all episodes for Season 12 yet. In fact, it seems like the upcoming episode might bring some challenging times for Atwater in his personal relationships. Here’s a sneak peek at what’s to come:
