Will Ferrell Cries As ‘Will & Harper’ Director Hails Actor’s Love for Trans Friend in New Netflix Film

As a long-time fan of Will Ferrell and his hilarious antics, I was absolutely thrilled to witness the tender moments between him and his friend Harper Steele in their new Netflix film “Will & Harper”. The journey they embark on, filled with laughter, tears, and self-discovery, is a testament to their enduring friendship and the power of authenticity.

On Sunday evening, director Josh Greenbaum praised the heartfelt connection that Will Ferrell and screenwriter Harper Steele conveyed on-screen in their latest Netflix production titled “Will & Harper”, which left Ferrell teary-eyed.

In the movie, Ferrell reunites with his old friend who had spent the first 61 years of her life as a man. Eager to live authentically, Steele is asked by Ferrell for a cross-country road trip. Along the journey, we see appearances from Tina Fey, Seth Meyers, and Kristen Wiig. Greenbaum’s film beautifully balances humor and emotion. The bond between the two friends is heartwarming and tangible as they explore their friendship and Steele’s fresh identity as a woman at different destinations.

Ferrell admitted during a Q&A at a London film preview, “I didn’t want to blunder or phrase my questions incorrectly.” He explained that they aimed to depict a casual conversation between friends. By presenting the interaction in an authentic, unpolished manner, he hoped the audience would feel immersed as they watched him awkwardly yet earnestly put forth his questions to his friend, who graciously tolerates his errors and urges him to continue asking.

There were a few moist eyes in the room as Greenbaum honored Ferrell and Steele for their involvement. “I feel an immense affection for them, for both individuals, it was a privilege to showcase my feelings in a movie.

Greenbaum added, “I truly wish [Ferrell] keeps receiving the appreciation he deserves. He’s poured so much positivity into our world, and we often overlook comedians who bring us laughter and ease our lives. I hope he feels that affection.” With a chuckle, Steele interrupted the emotional moment by saying, “What’s this nonsense?

Steele expressed her emotional state during her time in London following Ferrell’s mention of their trio visiting Sundance, Toronto, and Telluride Film Festivals. She recalled, “I had been in London filming a movie with Will, about the Eurovision Song Contest, just before the pandemic struck. It was a challenging period for me in London. However, finding joy amidst it all was possible, like savoring a Greggs sausage roll, which I finally got to indulge in as myself. It was truly delightful.” She then thanked everyone.

Ferrell shared some memorable moments from their 16-day journey with Steele. He stated, “Each day brought a special moment.” They constantly amused each other, and the highlights varied from Harper displaying photos of herself riding a unicycle, her preferred mode of transport in Iowa City, to unexpectedly encounter a young person on a unicycle outside her childhood home… Simply incredible!

Although they didn’t realize it was me,” he went on, causing the BFI Southbank crowd to chuckle, “Harper then climbed onto a unicycle while wearing heels. That incident, combined with our unexpected meeting at the Grand Canyon with a former therapist seeking redemption for a situation she felt unsure about, and my surprise encounter with Harper at a pool in a speedo… There were so many memorable moments.

The series “Will & Harper” that debuted at Sundance in January is set to stream on Netflix starting September 27th. Additionally, it will be screened in certain cinemas from September 13th.
