Will Ferrell Developing ‘Eurovision’ Movie Into Broadway Musical

Eurovision may be turned into a Broadway musical

Lia Vollack is developing a fresh musical adaptation from the 2020 Netflix film, “Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga”, which featured Will Ferrell and Rachel McAdams in leading roles. Ferrell will collaborate with Harper Steele, his co-writer on the movie, as well as Anthony King, who penned the book for the “Beetlejuice” musical, to write the script for this upcoming production. They have also previously worked together in the documentary titled “Will & Harper”.

The upcoming show boasts Savan Kotecha’s music, who served as the executive music producer in the movie, along with direction from Moulin Rouge! and Just In Time director Alex Timbers. However, the producers have yet to reveal a production schedule for the show.

The film tells the story of Lars Erickssong and Sigrit Ericksdottir, two hopeful Icelandic musicians, who are offered the opportunity to represent their country in the Eurovision song contest. The original song “Husavik (My Hometown)” from the movie, composed by Kotecha, Fat Max Gsus, and Rickard Göransson, was recognized with an Academy Award nomination for “Best Original Song” in 2020.

Ferrell expressed great enthusiasm as he announced that Eurovision would be making its way to Broadway. He believes that the stage musical provides an ideal platform for us to carry on celebrating everything wonderful about this unique and unifying song contest.

Timbers expressed that Will Ferrell and Harper Steele are his comedy idols. The moment he watched their cheerful movie “Eurovision” amidst the pandemic, it significantly lifted spirits during a challenging period. With this stage adaptation, he is eager to share the same blend of emotion, grandeur, humor, and wonder with audiences worldwide.

In 2009, Ferrell had his first performance on Broadway, where he portrayed former President George W. Bush in the short-lived one-person show titled “You’re Welcome America: A Farewell from George W. Bush“.

The Eurovision Song Contest has also signed off on the project.

As a passionate gamer, I’m thrilled to be part of an outstanding team that’s about to create an equally exceptional adaptation of a beloved film. Our goal has always been to spread the excitement of the Eurovision Song Contest to even more people worldwide, especially with our 70th edition approaching in 2026! – Martin Green CBE, Director, Eurovision Song Contest.
