A more joyful approach to celebrating Christmas is by singing boisterously for everyone to hear – a sentiment from the delightful movie Elf. However, an unsavory way to promote holiday cheer wouldn’t be crafting a terrifying, lifelike animatronic of Will Ferrell‘s character, Buddy the Elf. Granted, it’s January now as I write this, so it’s no longer relevant, but even then, it was undeniably scary. This monstrosity was unveiled to Ferrell live on television.
During his visit to TODAY, Will Ferrell, who’s starring in the Amazon Prime Video subscription-exclusive movie You’re Cordially Invited with Reese Witherspoon, was shown this Buddy the Elf decoration. His reaction is pretty much what I expected, i.e. saying the same sort of things I would if I saw the animatronic. Take a look:

This hideous Christmas decoration sends shivers down my spine, much like what someone commented in the video. To be honest, seeing it at Home Depot made me feel downright scared. It seems as if whoever approved this design wasn’t Will Ferrell himself, and the end result is certainly not something I can accept. Now, I’m not suggesting that this decoration had to be a lifelike wax figure, but considering how it turned out, it just doesn’t pass muster for me.
A month after actor Will Ferrell portrayed a rougher version of his Elf character, who had turned to vices like alcohol and tobacco on SNL, he encounters a life-sized Buddy figure. Ferrell humorously suggested that Buddy was let go from the North Pole for this transformation. Although it provided an amusing way to end 2024, this animatronic just leaves me feeling uneasy. It’s no surprise that Ferrell exclaimed “Get out of here!” and shooed it off-camera, as it didn’t merit any more screen time.
Despite the Christmas decoration based on Elf not being a hit, it didn’t diminish the enduring popularity of the movie, which fans still enjoy watching even during Independence Day. In fact, Elf has inspired a 2010 Broadway musical and a 2014 stop-motion animation special. Regrettably, Elf 2 was never produced. The reason for this is often attributed to creative differences between Will Ferrell and director Jon Favreau, but Ferrell himself stated that he wasn’t interested in the sequel because of its repetitive plotline. However, it’s alright, as some classics are best left as a single, timeless masterpiece, and I believe Elf certainly falls into this category.
Sadly, it seems that the movie “Elf” isn’t accessible on any top-tier streaming platforms right now, but we can expect that to change as Christmas 2025 approaches. In the meantime, you could check out another Will Ferrell film, “You’re Cordially Invited,” which will be released this coming Friday, January 31. Let’s also keep our fingers crossed that the giant Buddy figure won’t be up for grabs during next year’s holiday season celebrations.
