Will Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning Address This Question?

As a seasoned movie-goer and longtime fan of the Mission: Impossible franchise, I must say that the latest trailer for Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning has me utterly thrilled! With a career spanning decades and countless action films under my belt, I can confidently say that this is one finale I don’t want to miss.

In “Mission Impossible: Fallout,” Ethan Hunt reappears with the mission of shielding mankind from an advanced artificial intelligence threatening our existence. Picking up where “Dead Reckoning” left off promises to be quite challenging, requiring a multitude of familiar faces from earlier series installments to join in.

The freshly released trailer (as reported by Slashfilm) hints at more than just the reappearance of Rolf Saxon’s William Donloe and Angela Bassett’s Erika Sloane, but also the enigmatic Rabbit’s Foot from Mission Impossible III. Could Tom Cruise’s thrilling journey as Ethan Hunt be nearing its explosive finale and addressing past mysteries? It seems that’s exactly what writer/director Christopher McQuarrie aims to accomplish.

Who and What Is Returning For Mission Impossible: The Final Reckoning?

Luther Stickell starts off by saying, “The essence of our lives isn’t pinned down by a single act. Instead, our lives are shaped by the cumulative effect of our decisions. Every aspect of who you were and what you’ve accomplished up until now has led us to this point.

As the foreboding narration persists, it becomes clear that the destiny of every single life on Earth now rests upon you, with scenes from the current movie and previous episodes flashing across the screen.

Originally, it was planned to film “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning” and “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning,” the concluding chapters of the blockbuster franchise, consecutively. This latest trailer hints at a lot of returning characters and references from earlier films, suggesting that the grand finale might indeed be upon us.

“Easter Eggs, such as the reintroduction of William Donloe, a previously minor character, who was once a CIA analyst and now resides in an Arctic research station. After being exiled, he developed the AI program called ‘The Entity,’ which is causing problems for Ethan and his team.

Regarding Erika Sloane’s role, it’s intriguing to note that in 2018’s “Mission: Impossible – Fallout”, Sloane was a former CIA director turned Secretary of the IMF. Fast forward to the latest film, “Dead Reckoning”, some sharp-eyed viewers spotted a photograph resembling Angela Bassett’s character on the walls of The Director of National Intelligence’s office, typically reserved for presidential portraits. Could this hint at Sloane becoming President in “The Final Reckoning”? Furthermore, will she join forces with Ethan and his team to prevent the Entity from annihilating humanity entirely?

The intriguing recurring element in this story might be the mysterious Rabbit’s Foot. In the movie Mission: Impossible III, a black market trader named Owen Davian (portrayed by Philip Seymour Hoffman) seeks to sell the Rabbit’s Foot to a radical group for financial gain and global control. Its reappearance could signify nothing at all… or it could hold the key to understanding the ultimate aims of this AI for humanity.

To clarify, the Rabbit’s Foot refers to a supposedly dangerous biological threat that may have been concocted by a secretive Chinese investment group. It was rumored to possess the ability to cause global destruction. In a string of dramatic and suspenseful incidents, Ethan and Julia (portrayed by Michelle Monaghan) successfully recovered the Rabbit’s Foot; however, its ultimate fate remains unclear. While it was believed that Ethan secured it safely from potential terrorists and mitigated its power to some extent, its reappearance could suggest that this may not have been the case – or perhaps Entity has nefarious plans for it in the future.

Regardless of the circumstances, having it appear together with many well-known figures suggests a grand and explosive conclusion for Christopher McQuarrie’s last movie, which is set to premiere in theaters next year.
