As a die-hard fan of the legendary Javed Akhtar, it’s always a treat to follow his thoughts and opinions about the world of cinema. His rich background in writing some of the most iconic films in Indian history gives him an unparalleled perspective that few can match.
In 2023, the movie titled “Animal” made a big splash at the box office. Starring Ranbir Kapoor, it was also a crime thriller. Yet, it faced criticism from certain viewers due to its provocative scenes. Notably, even screenwriter Javed Akhtar has previously voiced his disapproval of the film. Recently, when asked if Ranbir would never reach stardom like Amitabh Bachchan because of “Animal,” Akhtar responded by saying he’d write a movie for Kapoor instead.
In a recent conversation with The Indian Express, Javed Akhtar expressed that the ‘angry young man’ character, once embodied by Amitabh Bachchan, seems to have faded away. He explained that beneath Big B’s anger lay a profound hurt. The writer noted that this pain was evidently hidden behind his angry facade.
He continued, “Then they forgot about the hurt and there was only anger which was crude. And that is how the angry young man went out of the scene.” He also added that today there weren’t great stars due to the lack of great characters.
Javed Akhtar was subsequently questioned, “Does that mean Ranbir Kapoor can never achieve stardom like Amitabh Bachchan because he’s done a movie called Animal?” To this, he replied, “No, no, I might write a film for him,” followed by a smile.
In addition to Ranbir Kapoor, the cast of Animal also includes Rashmika Mandanna, Triptii Dimri, Bobby Deol, Anil Kapoor, Shakti Kapoor, Prem Chopra, Saurabh Sachdeva, and more talented actors. Ranbir portrays the character of Ranvijay Singh, a man who chooses the violent path. The movie is helmed by director Sandeep Reddy Vanga.
Currently, Javed Akhtar is highlighted in the docuseries titled “Angry Young Men: The Salim-Javed Story,” which was made available on Amazon Prime Video on August 20, 2024. This captivating three-part documentary chronicles the remarkable journey of the renowned screenwriting duo, Salim Khan and Javed Akhtar.
