As a gamer who grew up watching television in the ’90s, I can’t help but feel nostalgic when I hear about Will Smith reflecting on his Fresh Prince of Bel-Air days. The show was a significant part of my childhood, and it’s fascinating to learn more about the creative partnerships that shaped its success.
Will Smith is reflecting back on his Fresh Prince of Bel-Air days.
On the recent episode of VICE TV’s Black Comedy in America series, the Emmy award-winner discussed the significant collaborators who shaped both his life and career. Among those he highlighted were Jazzy Jeff, his partner in the hip-hop duo DJ Jazzy Jeff & the Fresh Prince, as well as Alfonso Ribeiro, his co-star from The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, who played crucial roles in his rise to fame.
Smith mentioned that he’s had a few significant relationships which have significantly changed his life. One of these was with Jazzy Jeff, who, in a unique way, understood him beyond what others did. This understanding allowed him to create things tailored for Smith to excel and shine brightly. Alfonso Ribeiro was precisely that kind of person for him.
As a fervent admirer, I’d put it this way: “When Alf stepped into the audition room, there was no doubt in my mind – that was the right choice. He throws himself into every role with an unmatched intensity we refer to as the ‘comedic leap.’ You can sense where he’s going to attempt a joke, and he’ll go for it, putting everything on the line. One of his unique qualities is his dedication to lines, which he explains as a way to let the writers know if a joke doesn’t land.
As a dedicated gamer, I couldn’t help but share my enthusiasm for the Dancing With the Stars host during our chat sessions. On Tuesdays, it was like watching Tom Ribeiro hit the max level, putting in all his energy and skills, even though the actual shooting for the NBC series didn’t happen until Friday.
Smith said to host Chris Spencer, ‘It’s only by being ready to fail spectacularly that one can be truly humorous.’
In the latter part of the show, Will Smith (from I Am Legend) reminisced about his bonds with fellow Fresh Prince cast members, particularly Janet Hubert, who portrayed Aunt Viv from 1990 to 1993. As reported by Jet magazine, Hubert claimed that Smith might have had a hand in her dismissal when she chose to leave the series.
Smith admitted that he had significantly underestimated the worth, influence, and charm of a person on the show in the past. He realized he had undervalued her impact on him during that specific stage of his life.
In the year 2020, Smith and Hubert made up during a Max reunion special that marked the 30th anniversary of their popular sitcom.
After 27 years, talking with Will today and being here now, it feels like a healing moment for me,” Hubert shared during the special. “I didn’t come here to hold grudges; instead, I wanted resolution because it’s long overdue.
New episodes of Black Comedy in America air every Tuesday at 10 p.m. on Vice TV.
