Approximately three decades past, the movie “The Matrix” left an indelible impression on the science fiction genre. It stood out due to its pioneering special effects and layered narrative, which delved into profound moral and philosophical themes. This timeless sci-fi masterpiece also significantly boosted the popularity of actor Keanu Reeves, as his iconic bullet-dodging abilities and astonishment at learning Karate seeped into the zeitgeist of the ’90s. Interestingly, a different celebrated face might have graced this project, for Keanh Reeves’ role was initially offered to Will Smith. Unfortunately, Smith declined the offer to instead star in the box office flop “Wild Wild West“. At least he managed to produce that memorable single from it.

Though Smith’s infamous career blunder didn’t halt his professional progression, it seems he’s lately pondered over the overlooked chance. In a fresh music video, Smith assumes the role once played by Neo.

Will Smith Gets His Chance to Play Neo… Sort Of

In Will Smith’s latest collaboration with Big Sean titled “Beautiful Scars,” directed by filmmaker Ava DuVernay (known for her work on Selma and A Wrinkle in Time), the renowned actor revisits his past association with The Matrix. The video begins with a brief account of a part he didn’t take, then presents various scenes reminiscent of the popular sci-fi thriller. This includes moments like the memorable pill scene and the martial arts training sequence.

This video was made some years following Will Smith’s earlier video where he shared the tale of being offered the role of Neo in The Matrix (watch it here). In this, he discusses how the Wachowskis had only made one film prior, Bound, and that the meeting didn’t hint at the true brilliance of the project. Smith also confides that he nearly declined Men in Black, with the iconic role stemming from Independence Day, and him being hesitant about playing ‘the alien character.’ However, the intriguing aspect of the story behind his not taking on the role is what Smith humorously added:

Keanu Reeves and Laurence Fishburne both played their roles to perfection. If I had been in their shoes, given my race, Morpheus might not have been portrayed as Black because the creators were focusing on Val Kilmer’s version of Morpheus. In all likelihood, I would have disrupted or spoiled “The Matrix”. Instead, I think I managed to save it for you.

Keanu Reeves Was the Best Choice for ‘The Matrix’

Reflecting on it now, it’s clear that Keanu Reeves was ideal for the character of Neo in The Matrix. Although some people found his initial portrayal slightly grating, over time, Reeves has become synonymous with the leading role in this beloved sci-fi series. This was partly due to creating a relatable character that contributed to the film’s broad appeal and success. The story of one man discovering power didn’t need heavy philosophical commentary to be engaging. On the contrary, Will Smith’s recent revelations about his open marriage and his outburst at the 2022 Oscars have made it difficult to imagine him as a fitting addition to the legacy of The Matrix now.

The latest music video, while undeniably flashy and engaging, often evokes the thought “It’s a relief Keanu Reeves was Neo instead of Will Smith;” he just doesn’t pull it off as effectively as Reeves did. Personal preferences in music (I frequently opt for JPEGMafia, Danny Brown, Clipping., or Open Mike Eagle when it comes to rap) may vary, but the new single strikes me as old-fashioned and uninspiring. Nonetheless, feel free to watch the video below and form your own opinion while appreciating Ava DuVernay’s excellent direction; even if the music falls short for you, it offers an enjoyable glimpse into what might have been.
