According to sources, it has been reported by The Hollywood Reporter that actor Will Smith will not take part in the upcoming Matrix film directed by Drew Goddard, produced by Warner Bros.
The enigma that Smith hinted at on Monday through a cryptic Instagram post remains unsolved, as he shared that he declined the lead role of Neo in the iconic 1999 sci-fi film The Matrix, which was helmed by directors Lana Wachowski and Lilly Wachowski.

The Instagram post, featuring font reminiscent of “Matrix”, said: “Back in 1997, the Wachowskis gave Will Smith the chance to play Neo in ‘The Matrix’. However, he opted for ‘Wild Wild West’ instead, thinking it was a better match at the moment. Yet, one can’t help but wonder: How different would ‘The Matrix’ be with Will Smith as Neo? Come on, Will… The Matrix seems to be calling you…
In contrast, “The Matrix” became a groundbreaking movie that shaped an entire generation, whereas “Wild Wild West,” directed by Barry Sonnenfeld, received harsh criticism from critics and performed poorly at the box office. Smith shared the screen with Kevin Kline, portraying a gun-slinging ex-Civil War hero, in one of the few missteps for the 1990s box office titan.
It is unclear what, if anything, Smith’s post on Monday is teasing.
Last year, it was announced that Drew Goddard, known for movies like The Martian, The Cabin in the Woods, and World War Z, would write and direct a fresh Matrix film for Warner Bros. This marks the first time in the franchise that a Wachowski sibling will not be at the director’s helm; however, Lana Wachowski will serve as an executive producer on this new venture.
Approximately a quarter of a century ago, “The Matrix” was unveiled, captivating audiences with its thought-provoking plot, groundbreaking visual effects, and standout acting by Keanu Reeves.
