Will Spielberg Defy Hollywood’s Conservative Blacklist?

There’s a rule when it comes to sequels, remakes and reboots.

Bring the original players back by any means necessary.

In “Top Gun: Maverick,” the filmmakers crafted a role for Val Kilmer’s character, “Iceman,” that accommodated his speaking restrictions.

Another example?

In last year’s “The Fall Guy” movie, Lee Majors and Heather Thomas from the original TV series made a special appearance in the end credits. This suggests that the creators of the forthcoming “Goonies” sequel may aim to reunite the original cast who were once young for another round of comedic escapades.

Will Robert Davi join the fun?

In a versatile role, this actor portrayed the opera-singer Jake Fratelli in the 1985 movie. His portrayal of a villain made a lasting impact, and often, fans reminisce about the character when they meet him in person.

One plausible explanation for why the movie’s creators might not have included Davi could be that they found it difficult to incorporate him into the film, given his busy schedule or perhaps the storyline didn’t align with his role as an actor/singer. However, he assures us this isn’t just dramatic speculation on his part.

1) The actor openly identifies as conservative, which can be challenging in a field often critical of such views, and he’s had to deal with professional bias throughout his career.

He shared with Fox Digital, “Time will tell if they bring back Jake Fratelli or the Fratelli brothers in some form. I truly hope so, as it would be a dream come true to be involved. The Goonies is such an iconic movie that continues to resonate with people worldwide, even achieving status beyond cult fame.

He’s correct in many aspects, and his inclusion is justified. Fervent followers would prefer nothing less than seeing him in the follow-up film.

Now, it’s in the film’s key player’s hands.

In the production team for the sequel, you’ll find Steven Spielberg, who previously collaborated on the script and production of the original movie. Additionally, Chris Columbus, the co-writer from before, is back as part of the creative team.

The list of films attributed to Columbus is noteworthy, but few figures exert as much influence in Hollywood as Spielberg does. Remarkably, despite his Oscar wins, Spielberg has remained silent on the emerging conservative blacklist.

Certainly, he isn’t by himself in this situation. With his standing, it would be appropriate for him to express concern over the potential discrimination against talented individuals based on their political views.

The subject is beyond debate.

It’s possible that Davi will receive a call for the movie soon. However, so far, no such call has been made. The project was recently announced about 10 days back.

There’s a chance his phone never rings.

Instead of asking Zachary Levi directly, it’s known that the actor from “Shazam!” was aware of the potential consequences when he expressed support for Donald Trump’s presidential bid last year. He called this choice “career-ending.” Although he continues to work, some critics have shown a desire for him to no longer be part of the entertainment industry.

An alternative approach could be that the experienced members of the Goonies, remaining steadfast in their resilient attitude, advocate for Davi’s participation. However, considering the typical timidity within the industry, this situation appears less probable.

In 2018, when Roseanne Barr posted a highly offensive, racially insensitive tweet, her long-term co-stars chose not to support or defend her actions. This tweet led ABC executives to terminate her employment.

Lately, there haven’t been many prominent figures who spoke out in support of Gina Carano after she was let go from “The Mandalorian” by Disney over a seemingly harmless social media post.

It may take someone of Spielberg’s stature to ensure Davi gets his rightful place in the sequel.

The question is … will he?
