Veteran actor Wings Hauser, recognized for his powerful performances in films such as “Jo Jo Dancer, Your Life Is Calling,” “Vice Squad,” and “Tough Guys Don’t Dance,” has passed away at the age of 77.
Over the weekend, I learned of Hauser’s passing, which was shared on the Facebook page of the independent film and music studio we jointly ran with his third wife, Cali. At this moment, I don’t have any further details to share.
In addition, his son, actor Cole Hauser, who portrays the character Rip Wheeler in the series Yellowstone, is among the survivors as well.
Hauser made a significant impact when he played the role of the psychopathic pimp Ramrod in the gritty film “Vice Squad” (1982), directed by horror expert Gary Sherman for Avco Embassy Pictures. He also performed the movie’s theme song, titled “Neon Slime.
In the following years, he took on several notable roles. First, he portrayed a prejudiced U.S. Army officer in the 1984 film “A Soldier’s Story“, directed by Norman Jewison. Next, he appeared as a drug dealer in “Jo Jo Dancer, Your Life Is Calling” (1986), alongside Richard Pryor. Lastly, he played a police officer in “Tough Guys Don’t Dance“, a movie written and directed by Norman Mailer. For his performance in the latter, he was recognized with a Spirit Award nomination.
Hauser initially gained significant recognition when he started playing the character Greg Foster on the CBS daytime drama The Young and the Restless in 1977. He continued to portray this role for three consecutive seasons, and later made a brief return for a couple of episodes in 2010.
In addition to numerous television appearances, the captivating actor made recurring roles: as Lieutenant Colonel Miller on ABC’s show “China Beach” from 1990-1991, as Ty Tilden, neighbor of the Conners family on “Roseanne” from 1992-1993, and as bounty hunter J. Jay Jones on Fox’s series “Beverly Hills, 90210” from 1994-1996.
Gerald Dwight Hauser, born on December 12, 1947, in Hollywood, is the son of Dwight Hauser, an actor and screenwriter known for the radio drama ‘The Whistler’. Unfortunately, his father was a victim of the Hollywood Blacklist. His mother, Geraldine, was the daughter of Tom Thienes, a poet who published ‘Whimseys’, a book of verse, in the 1920s.
Hauser, who was known for his roles in films like “First to Fight” (1967), also had a passion for football during his school days. He earned his nickname while playing as a wingback at Thousand Oaks High School and the Northridge Military Academy. However, he eventually decided to focus more on acting and music.
In the 1970s, I found myself homeless, residing in a deserted garage within the MacArthur Park region of L.A., with my little daughter Bright by my side. However, things took a turn for the better in 1975 when I graced an episode of CBS’s Cannon, and as Wings Livinryte, I released “Your Love Keeps Me Off the Streets,” an RCA album filled with soothing country pop tunes.
In the latter part of that decade, I found myself gracing shows like “Baretta” and “Emergency!”, and even starred in the film “Who’ll Stop the Rain,” directed by Karel Reisz, alongside the talented Nick Nolte (1978).
Hauser got the idea for the war film “Uncommon Valor” (1983), directed by Ted Kotcheff and starring Gene Hackman, Patrick Swayze, and Robert Stack, from a friend who had served in Vietnam. He was also responsible for films such as “Coldfire” (1990), “The Art of Dying” (1991) and “Skins” (1994).

He acted alongside Adam West in the 1986 NBC show “The Last Precinct” and in the 1991-1992 syndicated action series “Lightning Force”.
His extensive filmography boasts titles such as “Wilding” (1990), “Beastmaster 2: Journey Through Time” (1991), “The Insider” directed by Michael Mann (1999) and “Rubber” (2010). He has also made guest appearances on various TV shows including “The Fall Guy”, “Hunter”, “Airwolf”, “Murder, She Wrote”, “The Young Riders”, “Monk” and “Rizzoli & Isles”.
He and Cali married in 2002. He also is survived by his siblings, Erich and Marcia.
