With Jensen Ackles' Soldier Boy Spinoff On The Way, The Supernatural Vet Reflected On How Dean's Story Ended

As a dedicated fan who has followed the Winchester brothers’ journey since its inception, I must say that Jensen Ackles‘ response about Dean’s demise resonates deeply with me. Reflecting on their characters’ conclusion feels more manageable now, having had some distance from the emotional turmoil of the show’s finale.

Despite periods when it seemed like The CW wouldn’t part ways with the suspenseful drama Supernatural, the series concluded its dedicated fanbase’s journey in 2020. Since then, actor Jensen Ackles has collaborated once more with creator Eric Kripke on the adult-oriented superhero show The Boys, and he will continue his Soldier Boy role beyond the 2024 TV planning horizon. With perhaps mischievous plans brewing ahead, Ackles shared his thoughts about how he feels now that Dean Winchester’s tale has reached its end.

At a recent SPNAustin fan convention focused on Supernatural, the previous Tracker character, who had guest-starred in both past and future episodes, joined forces with his former co-star Jared Padalecki and others to engage with fans about their acting journeys. More specifically, they discussed the periods of their careers when they were deeply identified with the Winchester brothers. During this interactive session, a passionate fan asked for their thoughts on how the creative team managed Dean’s death. In response, Ackles shared his feelings (as reported by Fangasm).

Indeed, it brings me joy to see him thriving, pursuing his purpose, and indulging in activities he’s passionate about. It was crucial for him to maintain his position, without facing illness or incapacitation that might have weakened him or led to his demise. Instead, the image of him standing tall and meeting his brother face-to-face carries a more potent impact. Consequently, I found satisfaction in how things unfolded.

It appears that Jensen Ackles never openly expressed discontent with how Dean’s story concluded on the show. However, considering his deep attachment to the character he portrayed for fifteen years, it’s plausible that he might have felt more emotionally affected by the series finale when they were actually filming it.

After accumulating numerous acting roles over time, it’s probably become less difficult for him to look back on the events such as Dean’s death following the fight against the vampire, his celestial adventures in the famous Impala, and rekindling his bond with Sam after Sam lived through old age and started a family.

At least, Dean managed to leave while maintaining his youthful appearance, avoiding a full season’s worth of medical investigations and emotional discussions that might have transpired if the writers decided to end his storyline through illness instead of monstrous attacks.

Jared Padalecki expressed his views on Dean’s departure happening sooner than the Winchester brothers might have preferred, and explained why he felt this was crucial to the show’s core meaning. In his own words:

Additionally, while I didn’t create it myself, I believe the interplay of characters in this piece was masterful. They had accomplished the seemingly impossible: slaying God and Satan. Yet, they were human with their imperfections. They vanquished every formidable foe, from vampires to zombies, rougarous, and wendigos. However, the subtle reminder that these individuals are not superhuman but ordinary people was a thoughtful touch in my opinion.

It’s quite intriguing that he phrases it this way, given Jensen Ackles’ character in The Boys is indeed superhuman and appears invulnerable to death. I can’t help but wonder how the Winchester brothers, Dean and Sam, would handle such a situation. I doubt they’d resort to physical combat.
