If Hollywood has the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), why not have a Village Cinematic Universe (VCU) for Bollywood? This is an idea that Panchayat director Deepak Kumar Mishra is considering. In a recent statement, Mishra expressed interest in developing a shared universe focused on rural stories, potentially combining his own projects with other village-themed narratives.
With Panchayat, Dupahiya, and Gram Chikitsalay, do you think a Village Cinematic Universe could be established just like Hollywood’s famous MCU?
In simpler terms, “Panchayat,” an extremely popular series on Prime Video, has raised the bar for storytelling that focuses on village life. Its success led to another show centered around rural themes called “Dupahiya.” They are now preparing to debut a third series in this genre titled “Gram Chikitsalay.
At the first World Audio Visual & Entertainment Summit, Deepak Kumar Mishra, the head of the Panchayat, shared that the initial blueprint didn’t include the idea of a common universe for stories set in villages. However, he expressed his willingness to embrace this concept if it organically evolved instead.
Mishra compared the concept of a unified universe to that of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, suggesting that it might also apply to a connected series of rural narratives. He further mentioned that whether these stories overlap or not is still uncertain, but the idea of self-contained tales coming together in a larger context would be intriguing.
At a gathering called “Creating Panchayat: Tales from the Grassroots,” Amazon Prime’s director Deepak Kumar Mishra was accompanied by the show’s author Chandan Kumar, as well as actors Jitendra Kumar, Raghubir Yadav, and Sunita Rajwar.
The team seized the moment to reveal the first sneak peek of the eagerly awaited fourth season of Panchayat, scheduled to launch on Amazon Prime Video on July 2nd.
Mishra attributed the show’s success to its authenticity, stating that the team aimed to create a realistic world from the beginning. This world was influenced by their personal experiences in Indian villages, and special care was taken to ensure the setting felt genuine. To maintain this realism, each season was filmed on location.
Apart from outlining the group’s core value, Mishra emphasized a unique approach: “In uncertainty, opt for the genuine over the correct action.” He explained that this concept was consistently implemented in every department to ensure authenticity remained consistent across the entire project.
