If you’re among the numerous enthusiasts of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered on your computer, you may have already spotted some problems within the game.
Based on the assessment by technology specialists at Digital Foundry, the remastered version of Oblivion encounters severe performance issues when played on PC. Alex Battaglia, a video producer at Digital Foundry, even went as far as to describe it as “possibly one of the most poorly performing games I’ve ever tested” for their platform.
Battaglia commented that even with top-notch hardware, the performance issues are excessive and unacceptable, making the overall user experience disappointingly poor. It’s hard to fathom how this could have been deemed acceptable for a public launch.
Beyond its quirks, this game is remarkably demanding on resources, making it one of the most resource-intensive I’ve ever tested. So, even if you can tolerate the occasional stutter, you’ll likely need to adjust the settings to maintain a decent frame rate.
It’s not unexpected to learn that the most popular mod for Oblivion Remastered on Nexus Mods is P40L0’s ‘Ultimate Engine Tweaks (Anti-Stutters – Lower Latency – No Film Grain – No Chromatic Aberration – Lossless)’, which has been downloaded an astonishing 386,604 times in just a few days.

As a dedicated gamer, I’ve found a definitive tweak strategy for my ‘Unreal Engine.ini’ settings to eliminate most of those annoying stutters, boost performance and enhance stability. This adjustment also aims to decrease input lag significantly, all while maintaining the same level of visual clarity without any noticeable loss in quality.
Following numerous tests with UE5 over several months, here are the final adjustments I’ve made to my personal ‘Engine.ini’ file that I recommend for your game, as shared by P40L0.
I aimed to incorporate a multitude of optimizations for CPU, GPU, RAM, and SSD resources, with the intent of minimizing lag, boosting performance, decreasing input delay, and enhancing image sharpness. This includes techniques such as removing film grain and chromatic aberration, optimizing DLSS/FSR upscaling, and more – all while preserving visual quality and avoiding any artifacts or system instability.
Feedback about the mod has been extremely favorable. chubbyd07 exclaimed, “Stutter be gone! Incredible, thanks!” yeeto51 added, “This .ini is nothing short of a miracle. Going from 15-20 fps outside the prison to a stable 65-70 fps on a system with a 3600XT and 20GB of RAM.” BabaSmith was equally impressed, saying, “I can’t believe it! I went from 60fps on High Preset around Waynon Priory to 90-110fps on the same location. Amazing work!
Despite the release of the PC version, Oblivion Remastered continues to garner significant popularity. It boasts an impressive number of concurrent players on Steam and has amassed over 4 million players across all platforms. On Steam alone, Oblivion Remastered enjoys a ‘very positive’ rating from its users.
Currently, an update (referred to as a hotfix) deployed on April 25 is causing trouble with the user interface settings for graphics in Microsoft Store games, particularly those involving upscaling and anti-aliasing. As of now, players using Microsoft Store (including those who play through Game Pass for PC) are unable to modify these settings due to a problem with the settings UI. Rest assured, Bethesda is working on resolving this issue.
