Leigh Whannell’s “Wolf Man” is set for a digital release on February 4, barely a month after its premiere in theaters. Interestingly, Universal Pictures has chosen to make the movie available digitally so soon after its theater debut.
According to recent reports, the reboot of Whannell’s “The Wolf Man,” released on January 17, received mixed reviews and did not perform exceptionally well at the box office. The movie fell short of earning $30 million, currently standing at $29.8 million, against a production budget of $25 million. This underperformance might be the cause for Universal executives to bring forward the digital release of the film.
As a devoted cinephile, I’m thrilled to share that “Wolf Man” is set to hit shelves on March 18th! For all you collectors out there, this one’s for you – it’ll be up for grabs in Steelbook 4K UHD, 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, and even good old DVD formats. According to Bloody Disgusting, that’s quite a lineup! For those who can’t get enough of this cinematic masterpiece, there will be a wealth of special features to dive into.

In “Wolf Man”, Christopher Abbott plays Blake Lovell, a man who, following the enigmatic vanishing of his father, moves his family – wife Charlotte (Julia Garner) and daughter Ginger – to his old rural home in an attempt at a new beginning. However, even before they reach their destination, the family encounters a beast that wounds Blake. And you can easily infer what unfolds subsequently.
‘Wolf Man’ Was Sadly Divisive Among Critics and Audiences
Universal Pictures aimed to rejuvenate their collection of Classic Monsters with assistance from Jason Blum, and they chose Leigh Whannell – director of the impressive 2020 adaptation of “The Invisible Man” – as the horror maestro who could recreate a successful strike twice in the same spot. However, this didn’t pan out as planned.
As a devoted cinephile, I must confess that this latest flick didn’t resonate with me or the critics as much as we had hoped. Whannell seemed to stray from his usual brilliance in storytelling, perhaps due to sharing screenwriting duties this time around, and the end result didn’t meet our expectations.
The werewolf theme, it appears, wasn’t a favorite among moviegoers either. The film slid down to the seventh spot at the box office during its second weekend, suggesting that the audience’s affection for Universal’s Classic Monsters might be waning. This could spell trouble for the future of the franchise, as the plans for Blumhouse’s continuation seem to be in jeopardy, reminiscent of the fate of the Dark Universe. Only time will reveal the true story.
