As a seasoned gamer who has witnessed the rise and fall of countless cinematic duos, I can confidently say that the reunion of George Clooney and Brad Pitt in “Wolfs” is nothing short of a triumphant return. The fact that these two Hollywood heavyweights are not only friends but also pranksters off-screen adds an exciting layer to their on-screen chemistry.
Back in the 2000s, George Clooney and Brad Pitt were an unforgettable screen duo, thanks to their roles in the Ocean’s trilogy and Burn After Reading directed by the Coen Brothers. Now, these real-life friends are reuniting for the upcoming Apple movie release, Wolfs, set to hit theaters in 2024. Recently, the film’s writer/director Jon Watts shared some behind-the-scenes stories about how he managed to get these two stars on board for his original action comedy. And let me tell you, the way it all came together is nothing short of hilarious!
Known for his work on the Spider-Man films starring Tom Holland, Jon Watts is now venturing into a new project titled “Wolfs.” After the massive success of Spider-Man: No Way Home, Watts chose to part ways with Marvel Studios and focus on this new endeavor. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, he shared details about his initial meeting regarding this movie with George Clooney. Here’s how Watts recounted that conversation:
It was a very easy pitch to George: It’s like two Michael Claytons.
In a twist of events, two individuals accustomed to operating independently – often referred as ‘fixers’ – discover they must join forces, as fate has them both assigned to the same task.
But after Watts got Clooney on board, he was warned by the actor about pitching to Pitt:
When approaching Brad Clooney for a project, it’s crucial to make sure everything is meticulously prepared, as he tends to be quite selective.
Last night, Jon Watts found himself tossing and turning due to George Clooney’s hints about convincing Brad Pitt for the movie “Wolfs”. However, he was taken aback when the actor from “Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood” unexpectedly joined the call, expressing his interest in the project before Jon could present his pitch.
‘Two fixers. Same job. I get it, man.’
After being taken aback, Jon Watts inquired if Brad Pitt was still interested in listening to the proposal he’d ready-made. Reportedly, this is how the actor replied:
Of course not. George shared all the details, and he assured me it would be enjoyable. So let’s go ahead with it. That’s what I proposed to Brad Pitt, but they were merely teasing me from the start.
Indeed, those two pals cleverly tricked the director of “Wolves” into thinking Brad Pitt was planning a tough negotiation, when in truth, George Clooney had always intended to reach out to him initially to secure his involvement right away. A classic prank, isn’t it?
In light of their reputation for practical jokes, it’s not entirely unexpected that this incident occurred. For instance, during the filming of “Ocean’s Twelve,” Pitt played a trick on Clooney by sending letters to the crew suggesting a different name preference, which reportedly made Damon witness Clooney at his angriest.
During the filming of “Wolves”, Clooney and Pitt seem to have enjoyed working together once more, given their long-standing friendship. They were having such a great time that they began discussing a sequel for “Wolves”, which has now been approved. Despite the fact that Watts may not have appreciated being pranked at the time, it turned out to be quite beneficial in the end and is now seen as extremely funny in retrospect.

Isn’t it wonderful to have these film stars reunite in one movie? Unfortunately, “Wolfs” will only receive a limited cinema release before becoming available exclusively on AppleTV+. You can catch it at your local theater on September 20, and it will be streamed starting from September 27.
