‘Wolfs Sequel With George Clooney and Brad Pitt Canceled at Apple

As a cinephile with decades of movie-watching under my belt, I must say I’m both disappointed and unsurprised by the news that Apple TV+’s Wolfs sequel has been canceled. After all, who doesn’t love a good team-up between George Clooney and Brad Pitt? It feels like they were just getting started!

It appears that the director has confirmed that the second installment of “Wolfs,” the crime comedy on AppleTV+, is no longer in development. The film, directed by Jon Watts, brought together George Clooney and Brad Pitt from “Ocean’s Eleven” as they played two skilled troubleshooters who reluctantly teamed up, despite their mutual disdain. Interestingly, Apple had shown great enthusiasm for the movie and announced plans for a sequel just a month before the original release.

It seems like my hopes for seeing more adventures with the Wolves might have been dashed. In an exclusive chat with Collider about the upcoming “Skeleton Crew,” director Jon Watts hinted that he doesn’t have any firm plans beyond his current project, and he appears to suggest that a Wolf sequel isn’t in the cards anymore. Although Apple hasn’t made an official announcement yet, Watts’ words certainly cast doubt on the future of “Wolfs 2.

Originally planned for a wide theater release on September 20, 2024, followed by an exclusive streaming debut on AppleTV+, the movie Wolfs was instead given a limited theatrical release on the same date. A week later, it became available on AppleTV+.

Apple’s Recent Movie Struggles

Even though “Wolfs” was Apple TV+’s most popular original movie, it wasn’t shocking that Apple decided to shelve plans for “Wolfs 2”, considering their recent challenges with original films. Prior to “Wolfs”, their four live-action feature films – “Killers of the Flower Moon”, “Napoleon”, “Argylle”, and “Fly Me to the Moon” – were all costly productions with big-name stars, but they all underperformed at the box office. Although “Killers of the Flower Moon” generated some awards buzz and “Napoleon” performed better than the others, the hefty budgets (mostly over $200 million) on these films and the dismal box office performance of “Argylle” and “Fly Me to the Moon” appear to have influenced Apple’s future movie strategies.

In simpler terms, Amazon Studios, which is also a film production company along with being a major tech firm, is experiencing similar financial difficulties as other studios with their big-budget movie titled Red One. This film, much like the movie Wolfs, was initially approved for production in 2021 and featured popular stars in an original production. The goal was to create franchises from these movies. However, after the release of both films, it appears that sequels such as Red Two or Wolfs 2 are no longer in development due to the movies not making a profit. Despite tech companies like Amazon and Apple having various income sources, they are now becoming more cautious with their spending on these unprofitable films.
