Woman of the Hour’s Anna Kendrick Slams Director for On-Set Humiliation

As a follower and admirer of Anna Kendrick‘s work, I can’t help but be inspired by her strength and resilience in the face of adversity. Her recent call-out of a filmmaker for “icky” behavior is a testament to her character and her refusal to be silenced or belittled.

Anna Kendrick is publicly criticizing a filmmaker for uncomfortable conduct. On a recent episode of the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast, Kendrick spoke about the most disrespectful comment she received from a director on set. Kendrick recalled an instance where a director embarrassed her in front of around 100 extras after asking her to improvise a scene, only to criticize her performance afterward.

In a past instance, I recall a director addressing a crowd of around 100 extras, saying, “Why don’t you try something new for the next take? Feel free to improvise. Let your creativity flow.” I followed his advice, and then he shouted ‘cut’, approached me, and once again in front of the same large group, said, “I see… let’s go back to the script.

Kendrick perceived the director’s response as a show of power. Interestingly, the off-the-cuff line she spoke ended up being included in the promotional video for the project.

Kendrick expressed that it seemed like an intentional attempt to belittle and assert control over him, which made him uncomfortable. He further mentioned that a spontaneous action of his was included in the preview, adding “I’m disappointed!” or simply “Shame on you!” depending on the desired level of formality.

Anna Kendrick Takes the Director’s Chair for Woman of the Hour

Kendrick has just made her directorial debut with the highly praised film, Woman of the Hour. This true crime thriller, now streaming on Netflix, shares the extraordinary, almost unbelievable story of Rodney Alcala, also known as “The Dating Game Murderer,” and his victims. In 1978, while carrying out his murder spree, Alcala made an appearance on the popular TV show The Dating Game.

Kendrick takes on the role of Cheryl Bradshaw in the movie, a single woman who joins the show hoping to date the contestant who wins. In the story, Cheryl chooses Rodney Alcala as her potential match, but they never go out together because she finds him unsettling. It wasn’t until 1979 that Alcala was arrested and eventually sentenced to death for murder. The exact number of his victims is unknown, with estimates suggesting it could be as high as 130.

Initially, Kendrick was associated with the movie as Cheryl, but when they couldn’t find an accomplished director for the project, she mustered the confidence to suggest herself. This bold move has proven fruitful. The film titled Woman of the Hour has garnered accolades for its narrative, its unique portrayal of both victims and the killer, and its investigation into sexism and the fears women encounter. Daniel Zovatto, playing Rodney in the movie, has received critical acclaim for his chilling portrayal of a serial killer. Remarkably, despite retelling events from the 1970s, the film offers a contemporary and thought-provoking perspective on the ongoing vulnerabilities women face.

During an interview with EW, Kendrick expressed her hope that the movie portrays the reality that, more frequently than not, there’s little one can do, regardless of intelligence or caution, to shield oneself from someone intent on causing harm.
