Would Disney+’s Percy Jackson Ever Introduce The Multiverse To Bring Back The Movie Characters? Rick Riordan Weighed In

As a devoted fan who has journeyed through the labyrinth of Rick Riordan’s mythological masterpieces since their inception, I find myself both excited and cautiously optimistic about the upcoming adaptation of “The Sea of Monsters.” While I understand and respect Rick Riordan’s decision to focus on the new cast and not revisit the original film series, a part of me can’t help but wonder if the gods themselves might one day bring those beloved actors back into the fold.

Following the long-awaited debut of Rick Riordan’s hit Percy Jackson series on Disney+, it’s now being transformed into a book-to-screen adaptation for the show’s second season – namely, The Sea Of Monsters. As filming commenced in August, the author has been busy on set. Lately, Riordan shared his thoughts about the possibility of a mythology multiverse featuring actors from the initial films.

In the realm of literature, Rick Riordan’s fans are well-versed in his unique universe that springs from mythology. Following the success of Percy Jackson, he delved further into Greek mythos through The Heroes of Olympus, and ventured into Egyptian mythology with The Kane Chronicles. Here’s a snippet of Riordan’s thoughts on crafting his own multiverse:

Wondering about Marvel, I can’t help but ask: How many films did they delve into the multiverse theme prior to introducing it? If a similar scenario were to unfold in their future projects, it would be quite some time from now.

In the course of a chat, Rick Riordan touched upon the possibility that actors such as Logan Lerman and Alexandra Daddario might reappear should a multiverse scenario become a reality. Below is his perspective on the matter:

We deliberately chose to focus solely on the fresh talent in this production, avoiding any distractions from past movies. It’s crucial that they have center stage and can fully embody their roles without being overshadowed by what has come before. In other words, we wanted them to have space to shine and make these characters their own.

It’s well-known that Rick Riordan was not fond of the initial Percy Jackson films, and neither was the studio nor the fans, as the franchise disintegrated after just two movies. At one point, he even compared the movies to his life’s work being put through a “meat grinder.” Given this, it seems reasonable for him to focus on the new series and let the original films be without further alteration. The author also stated:

At this stage of my professional journey, I find myself with both the availability and the influence needed to actively participate in decision-making processes, ensuring that my perspective is considered. Now, I see more clearly than ever before why some adaptations can take a turn for the worse.

It’s important to note that Percy Jackson from the past and the current Percy haven’t exactly collaborated, but their paths have crossed. During the development of the TV series, Logan Lerman expressed his joy about the project being brought to life by Rick Riordan. He also mentioned he was unlikely to be part of the cast, stating “who cares.” In a recent event for Hulu on Disney+ launch this year, Lerman and Walker Scobell, the new Percy, had a chance encounter and took a photo together.

As a fellow gaming enthusiast who’s eagerly awaiting the TV adaptation of “The Sea of Monsters,” I can’t help but share my excitement about the series elements from the books that I’d love to see brought to life on screen.
