As a seasoned gamer of reality TV dating shows, I can’t help but feel a mix of emotions when reading about the experiences of Joan Vassos and her fellow Golden Bachelor contestants. On one hand, it’s heartening to see that love knows no bounds, even in one’s golden years. But on the other, it’s downright disheartening to realize that the internet is still a breeding ground for some seriously creepy characters.
Last year when The Golden Bachelor debuted, one of its main objectives was to instill belief that love can be discovered at any age. Indeed, it achieved this throughout a heartwarming and motivational season. However, something the participants might not have anticipated is that if you’re never too old to find love, you’re also never too old to encounter strange individuals online. As The Golden Bachelorette gears up for its 2024 TV schedule, former contestants like Joan Vassos from Gerry Turner’s season have shared the most outrageous messages and solicitations they received, and let me tell you, these stories are quite shocking.
Joan Vassos might be taking the appropriate step by pursuing love on reality TV in the upcoming season of “The Golden Bachelorette“, given the type of individuals who contacted her via direct messages following her early departure from Gerry Turner’s season. In an interview with EW, she expressed discomfort about meeting those who messaged her, finding some of the messages “strange.” She disclosed:
In a somewhat unusual turn of events, I received explicit images and also encountered individuals with an unusual fascination for feet. They requested pictures of my feet and even offered monetary compensation for it. Remarkably, one individual proposed to purchase every pair of shoes I wore during the Golden Bachelor season. It was quite unsettling. My children, concerned, urged me to secure my phone and block these inappropriate solicitations.
Wow, there’s a lot of data here. Joan Vassos, aged 61, hails from an era when unwanted explicit messages weren’t common. Regrettably, her later years haven’t shared the same grace. The inquiry about buying her shoes is troubling, and I can only speculate that she quickly learned how to use the “Block” feature.
Yet, it’s unfortunate to note that she isn’t the only one from the The Golden Bachelor group dealing with inappropriate advances. Other cast members have shared similar experiences, including April Kirkwood who received a proposition from a man. Interestingly, his wife joined the conversation as well! In her own words, the 66-year-old narrated:
The creepiest one was an old yucky man. And then right after, his wife [messaged me] and said, ‘Would you like to do a threesome?’ I was shocked. They wanted to go in together with me.
It’s unfair to criticize a pair for taking a chance, right? As for Leslie Fhima, the first runner-up of The Golden Bachelor‘s inaugural season, things didn’t pan out with Gerry Turner, but she soon discovered there were plenty more potential suitors around. And when I say “potential suitors,” I mean “wealthy benefactors.” And when I say “around,” I mean the daunting world of dating. Fhima commented:
[One man] wanted to be my sugar daddy, and he itemized everything that he would pay for. I’ve been hit on by way more young men than [men] my age.
It seems that a detailed breakdown (itemized list) of the items requires careful planning. Frankly, it leaves me quite surprised. So, dear Ms. Fhima, could you kindly share the details of this itemized list? I’m eager to discover the costs associated with them.
Joan Vassos will have another opportunity to explore potential romantic connections, this time from a group of men carefully selected by ABC, including a parent of a former ‘Bachelor’ contestant. This is set to happen next month on ‘The Golden Bachelorette’. If things don’t pan out as planned (and I must admit, I share some of your doubts following Vassos’ conversation with Gerry Turner), she can take solace in knowing that she could consider OnlyFans as a potential alternative!
The television series titled “The Golden Bachelorette” debuts at 8 p.m. Eastern Time on Wednesday, September 18th, and will be available for streaming the following day if you have a Hulu subscription.
