Writers Guild West Removes Randall Emmett From Strike List Following Settlement Payment

Randall Emmett has been released from writers-union jail.

In 2020, the Writers Guild of America West placed a film producer on their strike/unfair list as a result of a disagreement over writer compensation for the TV series “Pump.” The union asserted that Emmett and his business partner George Furla were yet to pay over $477,000 in arbitration awards to writers for this series. Despite never being produced, the series initially featured Arnold Schwarzenegger in a leading role.

Approximately 14,000 members of the Writers Guild of America West are barred from collaborating with producers or entities that are on the strike/blacklist.

Following his transfer of $630,000 to the WGA West on a Friday, Emmett’s name has been taken off the roster, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter and originally broken by Deadline.

The action doesn’t automatically enable the union’s scribes to collaborate with Emmett once more, as the producer and his firms haven’t yet signed agreements with the WGA West. However, being taken off the list opens up a possibility for Emmett to seek a contract with the union in the future and potentially tap into their pool of talent.

Emmett’s partner, Steve Small, continues to be included in the roster of their joint company, Convergence Media Group.

THR has reached out to Emmett and a business associate for comment.

As a fervent admirer, I must say Emmett has made quite a name for himself, particularly in the realm of producing what some call “geezer teasers” – action movies featuring iconic veterans like John Travolta and Sylvester Stallone. Yet, he hasn’t just limited himself to that. His collaboration with the esteemed Martin Scorsese spans projects such as Silence and The Irishman. Even more intriguing is the rumor that he’s teaming up with the legendary New York filmmaker on a dramatic retelling of the catastrophic 1982 avalanche at Alpine Meadows Ski Resort, nestled near Lake Tahoe.

This year, the WGA West advised its members to be cautious about Scorsese’s role as a producer for the movie titled “Wall of White“. They warned this because the writer Emmett is on the Strike/Unfair list, and therefore, the group forbade its members from participating in the film’s production.

Currently, if WGA West writers are seeking a possible collaboration with Martin Scorsese in the future, they will need to search beyond Convergence Media Group as it is not yet affiliated with a union. Similar to Emmett himself, this production company and financier have not signed the necessary agreements with the union.
