The unique “madness” mechanic distinguishes Wuchang: Fallen Feathers from similar games within its category, requiring players to grasp its functioning, find cures for it, and employ it tactically to endure.
Wuchang: Fallen Feathers aspires to carve a niche in the heavily populated Souls-like genre, which currently includes Dark Souls, Elden Ring, and Black Myth: Wukong. In today’s competitive market, games must find unique ways to distinguish themselves from their peers.
As a fervent admirer of Wuchang, what truly distinguishes it for me is its immersive Ming Dynasty atmosphere and compelling protagonist. Yet, what makes this game truly stand out is its innovative Madness system.
Throughout my adventure, I’ll find myself grappling with not only fierce enemies but also the unpredictable ebb and flow of my sanity. Here’s a comprehensive rundown of all the key aspects that make Wuchang’s standout feature truly unique:
1. The Sanity System: This mechanic is at the heart of the game, constantly testing your mental fortitude as you delve deeper into the mysterious world of Wuchang. Keep an eye on your sanity meter and be prepared to face its consequences if it starts to slip.
2. Skill Trees: As you progress through the game, you’ll unlock various skills that can enhance your abilities or provide unique bonuses. Be mindful of the choices you make, as they could significantly impact your journey.
3. Environmental Interactions: The world of Wuchang is rich and interactive, filled with objects and environments that can be manipulated to gain an advantage or uncover hidden secrets. Use your surroundings wisely!
4. Boss Battles: Encountering powerful adversaries is a common occurrence in Wuchang. Each boss presents a unique challenge and requires strategic thinking and quick reflexes to defeat.
5. Puzzles: Solving intricate puzzles will be essential to overcoming certain obstacles and advancing through the game. Keep your wits about you, as these challenges can be deceptively tricky!
6. Multiple Endings: Your choices throughout the game will ultimately determine its outcome. Make sure to explore different paths to uncover all the possible endings that Wuchang has in store for you.
What is Madness in Wuchang: Fallen Feathers?
In my own words, I’d express it like this: “The turmoil within me mirrors the ongoing struggle against The Feathering, the enigmatic sickness plaguing Shu, which could transform me into a horrifying creature.
As you gradually eliminate non-birdlike adversaries, your Madness level rises, as shown by the gauge on the screen’s left side. However, slaying feathered opponents or completing crucial objectives such as defeating a boss will decrease your Madness level.

In this game, the amount of Red Mercury you lose upon death depends on the state of your Madness bar:
* If your Madness bar is less than half full, you’ll only forfeit a small amount of Red Mercury.
* If your Madness bar is between half and 90% full, you’ll lose a substantial amount of Red Mercury when you die.
* However, if your Madness bar reaches or exceeds 90%, dying will cause you to lose all your accumulated Red Mercury.
Once your energy gauge is completely filled, entering a “Frenzy” in Wuchang ensues. During this phase, you inflict greater harm, but simultaneously absorb more damage, until the frenzied state ceases.
If you meet your end while completely enraged, your Inner Demon will manifest at the spot where you previously succumbed to defeat, with the exception of during a boss battle. This formidable foe will launch an assault on you and your surroundings. Suffering defeat against it will strip you of all your rage, but also any resources you had dropped.
How to reduce madness
One method to ease your troubles in Wuchang: Fallen Feathers is through being defeated by your inner demon, but this implies you have to die twice in the same location and lose all your Red Mercury.
The most effective method is to make a prayer at the statue of Shu’s Temple. You will encounter this site early in your journey, and you can quickly return there from any shrine you discover on the map using fast travel.
Instead, you’ll require either Divine Gifts or fragments of Divine Gifts, which can be discovered by investigating hidden spots in every region.
These methods can calm you down when you’re at the highest level of madness, but beating a feathered enemy or major target will also slightly reduce your madness before you reach that state.
In other words, it’s not straightforward to make this happen unless you’re intentionally looking for suitable adversaries or contradicting yourself in the process.
Best ways to use Madness to your advantage
For beginners in the souls-like genre or those still getting accustomed, the Madness system could initially appear as a harsh penalty. It subtly reduces your survivability, making you more vulnerable to attacks, and if you die excessively, it summons a feral demon to chase you relentlessly.
To truly elevate your construction, it’s essential to incorporate Madness, as this allows you to unlock abilities and boosts that further amplify your strength when it amasses.
Heading to any Impetus Repository within the Shrines, take the path to the left, and you’ll find a collection of unique abilities linked to Madness. One such ability enhances your weapon’s Feathering Attack Power when it exceeds 50%.
In other words, certain weapon types are bound to your character. For instance, if you favor Longswords, you might gain the capability to recover stamina using a swift kick called Blink Kick, as long as your energy level exceeds 90%.
If you wholeheartedly adopt the concept of Madness, you might find yourself yearning to forfeit your mental stability to amplify your character’s power, particularly during battles against bosses. To achieve this, you can either utilize Maddening Incense or activate the Invoke feature, which will instantly boost your level.
Absolutely, you have the option to suppress your Madness for a more balanced perspective, but know that the boosted damage and additional perks will significantly ease your challenges in the later stages of the game.
