As a die-hard cinema enthusiast counting down the days to SummerSlam 2025, I’m on the edge of my seat! With twelve matches already confirmed and more possibilities on the horizon, the anticipation is palpable. The recent developments on Friday Night SmackDown, where our head booker Triple H and WWE made a significant stride toward rectifying a colossal mistake from WrestleMania 41 that fans are still fuming about, have only heightened my excitement!
I’m not referring to the biggest blunder at WrestleMania 41, which was the absence of The Rock in the main event and its replacement with Travis Scott, a decision that led to one of WWE’s least popular segments. A potential rematch between Cody Rhodes and John Cena might attempt to rectify that situation, but we’ll have to wait and see how it plays out. What I’m actually discussing is the match that didn’t make it onto the card.
Over the past year, the SmackDown tag team division has been exceptional, with numerous teams creating captivating storylines and delivering engaging matches. Given this impressive work, fans expected at least two of these teams to secure a spot on WrestleMania 41. However, surprisingly, the Street Profits vs Motor City Machine Guns vs DIY match was moved to the SmackDown post-‘Mania event, sparking strong and vocal criticism on social media. Despite the uproar, this decision remained unchanged, ultimately leaving all involved teams out of WrestleMania.
Initially, the choice appeared as a baffling blunder, but later, when the trio delivered an unforgettable Tables, Ladders and Chairs match on SmackDown post-‘Mania, it became clear that it had been an oversight. Fans hailed it as one of the greatest tag team matches ever, and there was a general consensus that it would have ranked among the best at WrestleMania 41 if it had been included. Fortunately, it seems WWE intends to rectify their error.
To wrap up SmackDown, commissioner Nick Aldis unveiled that this year’s SummerSlam will showcase a TLC match involving tag team champions The Wyatt Sicks defending against DIY, The Street Profits, Motor City Machine Guns, Fraxium, and Andrade & Rey Fénix. While SummerSlam may not reach the grandeur of WrestleMania, it’s widely recognized as either the second or third most significant PPV (Pay-Per-View) event of the year, based on individual preferences regarding the Royal Rumble. Securing a spot on this card is always a remarkable accomplishment, and if the teams manage to replicate even a fraction of the past TLC match at ‘Mania, it will undoubtedly become an unforgettable career milestone for all involved.
I strongly advocate for recognizing outstanding television work with significant opportunities, such as Pay-Per-View matches in WWE. The SmackDown tag team division has truly revitalized their segment, and they deserved a WrestleMania match for their efforts. Unfortunately, that didn’t happen, but I’m excited to see them getting a spotlight at SummerSlam instead. Here’s hoping this chance helps them maintain the momentum and demonstrate the thrilling aspects of tag team wrestling to a massive audience.
