It was nearly Damien Priest’s time to shine in the movie “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” but unfortunately, the part he was offered didn’t come through for him. However, Priest suggests that it wasn’t Disney or Marvel Studios who ultimately decided against him, hinting at another possible entity being involved. Known as one of wrestling’s rising stars, Priest claimed the WWE United States Championship in 2021 and the World Heavyweight Championship, making him a strong contender for a leap into acting alongside other WWE stars like Dwayne Johnson, John Cena, and Dave Bautista.
It appears that Actor Priest almost became part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe by landing a role in the film “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever”. During an interview on “Insight With Chris Van Vilet”, he mentioned being offered a part in this 2022 MCU sequel, but did not specify which character. However, given his tall stature and the fact that Alex Livinalli, who played Attuma in the film, is only slightly shorter than Priest, it’s plausible that the role was Attuma. Although some speculate that Priest might have been up for the main antagonist Namor, evidence seems to favor Attuma given the character’s imposing presence. In his own words, Priest stated, “It’s a long story, but … basically … it got taken away from me, but not from Marvel.” When asked who took the role, he replied, “Yeah”, but declined to provide further details.
Did the WWE Stop Priest from Joining the MCU
It’s quite plausible that Priest’s proposal was nixed by the WWE, particularly under the leadership of former President Vince McMahon. Known for his tight control over wrestlers, McMahon often resisted sharing them with other organizations and preferred to keep them for WWE-related projects only. Mercedes Moné has previously disclosed that the WWE attempted to prevent her from appearing in The Mandalorian Season 2, creating hurdles as she sought time off to film the series. This situation may have contributed to her absence in The Mandalorian Season 3. Similarly, former wrestler and MCU star Dave Bautista encountered conflicts with the WWE when he started venturing into acting.
2024 saw McMahon’s resignation in January following accusations of sex trafficking and sexual assault. If McMahon had been an obstacle, Priest might now have the opportunity to pursue diverse acting roles within the industry. Interestingly, Marvel Studios has a pattern of reconsidering actors for different roles; for instance, Chadwick Boseman initially tried out for Drax the Destroyer in Guardians of the Galaxy but ended up being replaced by WWE star Dave Bautista. Given the array of new characters like the X-Men soon to be cast, there could very well be suitable roles that Priest might fill within the Marvel universe.
