Absolutely! It seems that the second season of “X-Men ’97” will certainly introduce characters like Warlock, Havok, and Polaris into the mutant group. Additionally, a recent post on X (formerly Twitter) by DeMayo hints that the team’s costumes in Season 2 will resemble those from writer Grant Morrison’s “New X-Men” period in the early 2000s. DeMayo mentioned that this costume change was inspired by the storylines and themes of the second season, with the suits having connections to Genosha and the E is for Extinction arc.

With the unveiling of these new character costumes and their debut, “X-Men ’97” Season 2 offers numerous intriguing plot possibilities for its storylines. Let’s explore where the series appears to be heading.

Warlock, Havok, and Polaris are all crucial players in the X-Men universe

Given that Cyclops (Ray Chase) emerged as Marvel’s most stylish mutant in “X-Men ’97”, introducing his younger brother Alex “Havok” Summers could potentially be one of the more intriguing aspects of Season 2. Similar to Cyclops, Havok is a mutant who controls energy, but his cosmic radiation-powered plasma blasts can encompass his entire body and are typically directed by his hands during attacks. Remarkably, from a sibling rivalry perspective, neither brother can affect the other’s powers, so their disputes might not be easily resolved through physical confrontations using their energy abilities.

Given that Havok is arriving, it’s only fitting that Lorna “Polaris” Dane would be present too. Polaris, who is Magneto’s daughter, possesses powers similar to his but often chooses academia over the ongoing battles between heroes and villains. She also begins her X-Men tenure around the same time as Havok and has a complex romantic past with him. In contrast, Warlock, an alien entity capable of shape-shifting and techno-organic abilities, is more closely associated with the New Mutants, specifically team member Cypher.

As a die-hard fan, I must say that these three characters, namely Havok, Polaris, and Warlock, have truly left their mark in the comic book world. Interestingly, you might recall that they all made an appearance in the iconic “X-Men: The Animated Series.” In fact, Havok and Polaris were key members of Forge’s X-Factor team, and Polaris also featured prominently during the epic storyline of “The Phalanx Covenant,” an alien empire that had a significant focus on the rogue Phalanx member, Warlock.

What do the new costumes and characters mean for X-Men ’97?

The appearance of costumes from Grant Morrison’s era and DeMayo’s revelation that they connect to Genosha and the “E Is for Extinction” storyline suggest significant future events. Interestingly, “E Is for Extinction” merges elements from the ’97 X-Men series like Sentinels and the Master Mold (David Fox) with a fresh villain, Cassandra Nova, who is well known as an adversary of Deadpool and Wolverine. It’s unclear if Emma Corrin will return to reprise her role or if the show will approach the “E Is for Extinction” storyline from another perspective.

Besides these main plotlines that have been established, the inclusion of Havok, Polaris, and Warlock provides some hints. Given how quickly “X-Men ’97” Season 1 adapts significant comic book storylines like “Inferno,” it’s probable that the key story arcs involving these three characters will not extend beyond a single episode. However, exactly what these storylines entail is less clear.

In other words, the comeback of Polaris and Warlock could lead us back to the Phalanx problem in Season 2. This storyline may focus on the techno-organic species’ significant events outside the “Phalanx Covenant,” such as the Phalanx’s invasion of the Kree Empire, orchestrated by Avengers villain Ultron. It’s intriguing to note that this plot includes the Guardians of the Galaxy, implying fans might witness the mutants collaborating with a version of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s popular space-exploring team. Additionally, Havok and Polaris may still be connected to X-Factor, which means Forge (Gil Birmingham) could continue his ties to the team. No matter where “X-Men ’97” Season 2 goes, it seems like things are shaping up for an exciting ride!
