X-Men 97's Director Had Notes On Channing Tatum's Gambit Costume, But Told Us The Moment He Made Them Swoon And Won Them Over

As a seasoned gamer who’s been on this rollercoaster ride since the days of X-Men: Mutant Apocalypse on Sega Genesis, I must say, 2024 has truly been Gambit’s year to shine. The nostalgia trip with X-Men ’97 and the surprise appearance of Channing Tatum’s Gambit in Deadpool & Wolverine have left me absolutely card-tricked!

Warning: SPOILERS for X-Men ’97 and Deadpool & Wolverine are ahead!

If you’re a fan of X-Men and managed to foresee that 2024 would be Gambit’s year for prominence, then bravo, you possess the gift of foresight! In the first half of Season 1 on Disney+’s X-Men ’97, Remy LeBeau had some standout moments, and his death in “Remember It” was one of the most debated topics among viewers, if not the most. Towards the end of last month, the movie Deadpool & Wolverine was announced for a 2024 release, with Channing Tatum’s Gambit being one of the key appearances in Deadpool 3. The director of “Remember It”, Emi Yonemura, has recently revealed to TopMob details about Tatum’s Gambit costume and what impressed them about his performance.

In a chat held about three months after our earlier conversation with Emi Yonemura and Chase Conley following the Season 1 finale, Sean O’Connell recently interviewed Yonemura. During their discussion, they touched upon various aspects such as depicting Wolverine’s adamantium extraction from his bones and their desire for a more expansive “Lifedeath” storyline. Now that ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ has been released, Sean inquired Yonemura about their thoughts on Tatum’s portrayal of Gambit. To which, they expressed their opinion.

Initially, I had my doubts about him, as I hadn’t seen him as the Cajun character years ago when his name was merely mentioned. However, once he made his screen debut, I found myself wanting to see more of his mask, asking for it to be revealed a bit more. When he whispered “Boom,” I became completely smitten and thought, “He’s my Gambit now.” He won me over, leaving me eager to watch the movie.

“Wesley Snipes, Jennifer Garner, and their team put in extra effort for their roles in Deadpool and Wolverine projects.” This version is more concise, easy to understand, and maintains the original meaning.

I found Channing Tatum’s portrayal of Gambit just as delightful as everyone else, but it’s crucial that Marvel steers clear of any significant blunders when handling this character in the future.

As a die-hard gamer, I’ve been eagerly waiting for Channing Tatum to slip into the role of Gambit since forever. It’s been 15 years since Taylor Kitsch donned the character in live-action for X-Men Origins: Wolverine. But things didn’t pan out as planned, with numerous attempts to create a Tatum-led Gambit spinoff from 2014 to 2019, only for it to be called off when Disney took over 20th Century Fox.

Initially, directors had reservations about Channing Tatum playing Gambit, but after addressing minor concerns over his costume, Nomemura is fully supportive of the Gambit spinoff’s return. However, whether we’ll actually see Tatum as Gambit again or not remains uncertain. Given that _Deadpool & Wolverine_ has launched the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s mutant era and an upcoming X-Men reboot is planned with fresh takes on these characters, it’s possible that Tatum’s Gambit could appear in other MCU projects exploring the Marvel multiverse, such as the next Avengers films.

The action duo of Deadpool and Wolverine continues to play in cinemas, amassing over $1 billion globally, with Inside Out 2 leading the way this year. Meanwhile, the second season of the X-Men ’97 series is set for a future release on Disney+, and plans are underway for Season 3.
