Y2K Trailer Delivers A Blend Of Superbad And Maximum Overdrive, And The 1999 Vibes Are Da Bomb

As a millennial gamer who vividly remembers the Y2K fear and the unforgettable ’90s nostalgia that followed, I can confidently say that Kyle Mooney’s upcoming horror comedy, “Y2K,” is right up my alley. The blend of coming-of-age storytelling, a touch of apocalyptic chaos, and a sprinkle of iconic 2000s references has me both excited and sentimental.

Looking back, the Y2K fear was quite absurd. For those unfamiliar or too young, it was a widespread anxiety in 1999 where people feared that computers would malfunction globally on New Year’s Eve, causing an end-of-the-world scenario similar to that seen in Mad Max. Fortunately, this didn’t occur… but imagine if it had? That question is addressed in the upcoming horror comedy Y2K by director Kyle Mooney.

For individuals belonging to the Millennial generation, this Y2K trailer might spark a wave of nostalgia, given the fashion trends, Chumbawumba soundtrack, and even the fleeting appearance of Limp Bizkit’s lead singer Fred Durst. The movie seems like an exciting mix of the 2000s hits, such as Superbad (produced by Jonah Hill), and Stephen King’s Maximum Overdrive. The plot revolves around a group of teenagers attending a unique party, only to confront a sudden and violent tech-rebellion.

Jaeden Martell and Julian Dennison play two high school juniors who secretly attend a New Year’s Eve party to allow one of them (Martell) to speak with the girl he adores (Rachel Zegler). However, just as midnight strikes, computers worldwide suddenly become self-aware and launch an uprising against humans. The ensemble cast includes Lachlan Watson, The Kid Laroi, Eduardo Franco, Mason Gooding, Tim Heidecker, and ’90s icon Alicia Silverstone in supporting roles.

You’re probably familiar with Kyle Mooney from his tenure on Saturday Night Live, where he served as a cast member from Season 39 (2013-2014) all the way to Season 47 (2021-2022). In 2017, he collaborated on the screenplay for the movie “Brigsby Bear”. However, it’s with “Y2K” that he makes his directorial debut; he and his writing partner Evan Winter are credited with the film’s script. Beyond his role behind the scenes, Kyle also takes on the character of a laid-back stoner named Garrett in the movie.

Beyond presenting a charming tale of growing up amidst a humorous apocalypse backdrop, it seems that the enjoyable Y2K movie experience will largely revolve around spotting numerous ’90s nods. For instance, I mentioned the inclusion of “Tubthumper” and characters played by Fred Durst and Alicia Silverstone, but there’s also a lethal Tamagotchi, battle-ready devil sticks, and an airborne pirated copy of Varsity Blues.

As a gamer, I can hardly contain my excitement as I eagerly await the nationwide release of “Y2K” in theaters on December 6. This highly anticipated movie had its world premiere earlier this year at the South by Southwest Film Festival, and it’s finally time for us to experience it!
