As I delve deeper into Assassin’s Creed Shadows, my appreciation for the complex bond between Yasuke, the Samurai, and Naoe, the Shinobi, grows. They are such vividly developed characters that it seems unlikely the game is guiding them towards a romantic connection, but I can’t help but hope they become a pair – affectionately known as “shipping” them.
(Spoiler Warning for the game’s first few hours.)
In their unique ways, both characters captivate our attention. Naoe mourns her father’s demise and pursues revenge with unwavering determination. Conversely, Yasuke’s life is deeply rooted in Oda Nobunaga. The narrative takes an intriguing turn as they enter Act 2, fostering an unexpected connection between them.
In the chronicles of Japan, Yasuke stands out as unique – he was the first foreigner to ever achieve Samurai rank. Accompanied by Naoe and her band of unconventional individuals resembling the legendary Hidden Ones, Yasuke finds a sense of camaraderie in this group of misfits. They were all outsiders navigating through Japan’s relentless period of conflict. Despite their differing perspectives, they share a bond as equals, banded together against a common adversary.
Occasionally during the game, especially at the Hideout, Naoe and Yasuke engage in brief side quests that offer them opportunities to converse and relax. In one instance, they share sake and end up with hangovers—Naoe finding himself stranded on a rooftop, while Yasuke is found unconscious in a wheelbarrow.

Experiences such as these only enhance my admiration for Assassin’s Creed Odyssey. The pairing of the characters is flawless.
As I delve deeper into this epic adventure, my gaming partner and I remain unbreakably bonded. Our journey spans an impressive 25 hours so far, and every mission, whether main or side, has us working in perfect harmony. Even when we switch between characters, their unique viewpoints shine in cutscenes, but they always manage to find a shared purpose in their struggle against the formidable Shinbakufu.

I’m eager to find out how their relationship progresses from here on. Historically, Yasuke was captured in his pursuit of revenge following Nobunaga’s murder. However, since Naoe is a fictional character, it gives me optimism that both characters will somehow reconnect after these events transpire.
I haven’t reached the end credits of Assassin’s Creed Odyssey yet (known to run for about two hours), but the portrayed relationship between the characters is, without a doubt, Ubisoft’s most impressive work in a dual-protagonist narrative. It surpasses their previous attempts with Evie and Jacob Frye from Syndicate, and it’s certainly superior to Kassandra and Alexios.
