As a dedicated fan who has followed Danica McKellar‘s career since her days on “The Wonder Years,” I can’t help but admire her decision to switch networks. Her journey from child star to successful actress is nothing short of inspiring, and it’s fascinating to see how she continues to evolve in her craft.
The 2024 holiday movie season on television is fast approaching, and it’s shaping up to be an exciting time, particularly on channels like Hallmark and Great American Family (GAF). In a relatively short span of time, GAF has gained popularity among viewers, in part due to its impressive roster of stars. This is partially due to the fact that several stars from Hallmark have switched to GAF, with Danica McKellar being one of them, who recently shared her reasons for doing so.
Following her appearances in numerous original films at Hallmark, the actress who was part of “The Wonder Years” family decided to part ways with the company in 2021, opting instead for GAF. She was one of the initial stars to take this step, which was later followed by Candace Cameron Bure, Jen Lilley, Trevor Donovan, Jessica Lowndes, and others. On her “Sex, Lies, and Spray Tans” podcast with former “DWTS” professional Cheryl Burke, McKellar explained the reasons behind her departure from Hallmark: she did not have any grudge against her previous workplace but chose to move on due to various factors that she elaborated upon during the conversation.
The Great American Family channel was launched by a man who spent two decades at the helm of Hallmark Channel. His name is Bill Abbott. I owe him a debt of gratitude for rejuvenating my career and providing me with opportunities within that genre. During my time at Hallmark, I worked on about fifteen movies with him. So, when he chose to establish his own network and invited me to join, I gladly accepted.
Despite maintaining a steady acting career like McKellar and being one of many former child stars who continue to act, there was a period in the mid-90s when she took a break from acting following The Wonder Years. However, she eventually returned to the industry and secured a role at Hallmark in 2015. This marked a new phase of success for her, and it’s understandable that she might have been drawn back by someone who played a significant part in her accomplishments.
As a devoted admirer, I’d like to express that Bill Abbott wasn’t solely responsible for Danica McKellar’s desire for a fresh environment. Even though she’s starred in almost twenty films at Hallmark, the actress emphasized one key aspect that Greater Asia Television (GAF) offered that her previous network lacked: a unique element which I believe added a new dimension to her creative journey.
At Hallmark, I didn’t have an all-encompassing contract, but with Great American, I secured multiple movie deals that gave me more control over the writing and production. It’s incredibly rewarding creatively. The fact that I’ve made two dance movies because I wanted to is a testament to my involvement. Although it has a smaller audience right now, Great American is growing, and they allow me to incorporate my faith into some of the narratives. Overall, it’s an exceptional situation that I’m deeply thankful for, and I appreciate Bill immensely too.
It wasn’t unexpected when McKellar revealed her departure from Hallmark, as her new agreement at GAF provides her with greater control over the projects she works on, which aligns perfectly with her long-term collaboration with Bill Abbott, making this transition a sensible decision.
Currently, the actress has several upcoming films lined up, one of them being “A Cinderella Christmas Ball,” set to air on November 29 in the 2024 TV lineup. This movie also features Oliver Rice, Sarah Orenstein, and Haley Summer, and it tells the story of a dance instructor who journeys to a small European nation during the Christmas season to discover her roots. Consequently, fans shouldn’t miss out on this production as well as other projects that Danica McKellar is collaborating on with GAF.
