Yellowstone: After Hearing Kayce’s Proposal For The Ranch, I Have A Theory About Who He’s Going To Involve

As a seasoned Yellowstone viewer, I can’t help but feel the weight of impending change in the Dutton’s world. With John Dutton’s demise and the looming threat from Market Equities, it seems that the Yellowstone is teetering on the edge of oblivion. The latest episode saw Beth and Kayce selling off their horses and equipment, hinting at a possible land loss.

Warning: Spoilers for the final episodes of Season 5 of Yellowstone, particularly Episode 13, are coming up! If you haven’t seen it yet, catch up on the Paramount Network and stream previous seasons with a Peacock subscription.

The outlook for Yellowstone is grim, with John Dutton’s death and a confrontation with Market Equities causing Beth and Kayce to sell their horses and equipment in the most recent episode scheduled for 2024 broadcast. All indications suggest they may lose their land. Intriguingly, at the end of Episode 13, Kayce suggested gifting the ranch to someone, but he didn’t specify who that might be.

Currently, it’s unclear who exactly will receive the ranch, but based on the circumstances, it seems quite apparent who might be the likely recipient. Let me share my thoughts as to why I believe Kayce is planning to bring Thomas Rainwater into his scheme.

The Plan Kayce Proposed To Beth

It came as a surprise to both Beth and me that Kayce Dutton appears to have devised the strategy for preserving Yellowstone. In a talk between them, the youngest Dutton posed a business query to his sister, employing a scenario where one would consider the tax payment if a vehicle priced at $300,000 was acquired for just $1.

User: Alright, you’ve acquired a vehicle for just a dollar, which originally cost $300,000. Now, you register this same car. In this scenario, how much sales tax would I be expected to pay? Is it determined by the amount I paid or the actual value of the car?

Beth: What are you cookin’?

Kayce: Just answer the question.

Beth: Tax is based on what you paid for it.

Kayce: That’s what I thought.

Following their conversation, Kayce departed from his sister. As she grasped the scheme he was concocting, she pursued him, inquiring who was involved in this agreement. He replied that he required some time to sort it out. Subsequently, he informed Monica that this was:

The only way to save this place; you gotta give it away.

This begs the question: Who are they going to give the ranch to? Well, I think the answer is pretty obvious.

Why I Think Kayce Is Going To Involve Rainwater In His Plan

Mark my words, they’re going to give the land to Thomas Rainwater and the Broken Rock Reservation.

As Rip and Beth focus on the ranch and its tasks in Texas, Kayce maintains secrecy about his plans while growing increasingly connected with Rainwater and Mo. This situation suggests that these individuals may be the ones he referred to when telling Beth he required a day to finalize that deal.

To put it simply, I’ve got a ton of admiration for old man Dutton, and just like him, my aim is to safeguard this land and maintain its pristine beauty. As Thomas Rainwater, as portrayed by Gil Birmingham, expressed to Beth in Episode 11: “We both share the same goal – preserving our land, the natural way.

As a gamer, I yearn for what my father aspired to, yet I’m a practical soul. It’s impossible to preserve this entire landscape intact. But isn’t there some part of it that could endure, untouched, just as it was when my grandparents roamed it?

During that very discussion, he offered to assist Beth in developing potential solutions should any come to mind. Yet, she found herself at a loss. However, it appeared her younger sibling had solved the puzzle, and it’s safe to assume (and likely also his assumption) that only Thomas Rainwater could be trusted somewhat in this situation.

In the prequel series 1883, set before Yellowstone, an elder named Spotted Eagle advised James Dutton that he could use the land they had arrived at in Montana for burial and settlement. However, his people would reclaim it after seven generations. Considering the Dutton family lineage, Kayce and Beth might be representing either the fifth or sixth generation of Duttons living on this land.

In other words, since we’re not at the seventh step just yet, it might be reasonable to think that this prophecy began to come true when Kayce and Beth sold this property to Rainwater for an extremely low price.

Indeed, as things stand, this is merely a hypothesis. But keep an eye out for who Kayce will strike a deal with next, as Yellowstone is nearing its end. Remember to catch the finale of Season 5 on Sunday, December 15 at 8 p.m. ET, only on the Paramount Network.
