As a long-time movie buff with over three decades of experience under my belt, I can say with confidence that the enigmatic dance between Kevin Costner and the creators of Yellowstone is reminiscent of a classic Hollywood cat-and-mouse game. The tantalizing hints dropped by director Christina Alexandra Voros about Costner’s potential return to the set of Yellowstone have left fans in a state of frenzy, not unlike the excitement that surrounded the release of Dances with Wolves back in 1990.
Could it be that Kevin Costner is secretly reprising his role in the final episodes of Yellowstone? It certainly seems so, as director Christina Alexandra Voros hinted at the possibility. In a recent interview, Voros suggested that the actor who plays John Dutton may have indeed been present during the filming of the finale for Taylor Sheridan and John Linson’s Western series. When asked about the changes on the Yellowstone set without Costner, Voros played coy with The Hollywood Reporter: “The set is different, but in some ways, it feels the same.
“I don’t know if we were without him. I don’t know!”
Costner has openly stated that he will not be participating in future episodes of “Yellowstone” after his departure from production following the completion of the first eight episodes of Season 5. Despite this, Costner (who won Oscars for Best Director and Best Picture for “Dances with Wolves”) made it clear on Instagram on June 20 that he would not be reprising his role as John Dutton. However, Voros later stated in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter that the character of John Dutton is “essential” to the second half of Season 5.
His involvement is crucial, and discussing anything beyond that might jeopardize all the effort put into editing the scripts. (Laughs) However, I believe the curiosity about whether he’s here or there arises because he plays the patriarch, and his presence significantly contributes to the narrative. John Dutton remains a key figure.
COVID-Level Secrecy Went Into Protecting Yellowstone Season 5B
In the teaser for Yellowstone‘s final episodes of Season 5, John Dutton played by Kevin Costner was prominently shown, although it’s been reported that he won’t be reprising his role. However, whether or not Costner will make an appearance remains a mystery. Christina Voros, the director, hinted at something during an interview with THR, but it’s unclear if this was intentional or not. As for keeping spoilers under wraps, Voros mentioned that there are COVID-like precautions in place to prevent any Season 5B secrets from being revealed.
As a film critic, I found myself drawing an unexpected comparison between this production and COVID-19 safety measures. Just as certain aspects of the virus were hidden from us to maintain the bigger picture, so too was information meticulously withheld in this movie to foster a more immersive experience. It was a delicate dance, for actors can’t simply be handed their lines without considering the intricate web of knowledge their characters had gathered throughout the story. A subtle artistry was required in determining what information each actor needed to embody their character convincingly, all while safeguarding sensitive material from unnecessary eyes.
In the final six episodes of Yellowstone, Voros was responsible for directing four of them, making her well-versed in the show’s happenings or, as she herself puts it, “privy to the inner circle.” Yet, when it comes to who else knows about the events unfolding in Season 5B, only a few chosen individuals are privy to this information. Voros further explained:
The heads of our various departments include Director Michael Friedman. The core Dutton family members are part of a confidential club. Generally, cast members were aware of the scenes they were involved in. Therefore, if an event occurred in a scene that required secrecy, they were informed. However, about half of the cast remains unaware of this season’s developments, except for their specific roles.
Approaching two years since its last episode in January 2023, “Yellowstone” is finally set to reappear, bringing much-anticipated events including, hopefully, a long-awaited train journey. Will John Dutton, portrayed by Kevin Costner, fail to show up? Discover the answer when Season 5B premieres on Sunday, Nov. 10, at 8 p.m. EST/PST on the Paramount Network. An encore presentation will air at 10 p.m. on CBS.
