As a die-hard fan of Yellowstone, I can’t help but feel like I’ve stumbled upon a modern-day gold rush! The sheer magnitude of viewers tuning in for the show’s comeback is nothing short of astounding. It’s not every day you witness history being made, and this is definitely one for the books.
The debut of Yellowstone on Paramount Network drew a massive crowd, not quite as large as the one who wondered “Who shot J.R.?”, but still quite significant.
As a devoted fan, I can’t help but share an exciting piece of news about my favorite show – the episode that unveiled John Dutton’s fate drew in a record-breaking 16.4 million viewers on Sunday night! This historic number comes from VideoAmp, our current ratings provider, and it includes not just the two eight-network simulcasts and CBS showing, but also three re-airs on Paramount Network and CMT during early Monday morning hours.
On the occasion of Sunday’s broadcast, the viewership surpassed the record-breaking season five premiere in November 2022. This episode garnered a staggering 15.9 million viewers according to VideoAmp, although Nielsen reported 12.1 million same-day viewers for the same episode. The November 2022 premiere was only aired once simultaneously on seven channels instead of eight, and it wasn’t shown at all on CBS.
The VideoAmp statistics do not account for streaming, since shows like Yellowstone do not offer night-of or next-day streaming options. Previously aired seasons are accessible on Peacock due to an old licensing agreement, which also prevents new episodes from appearing on Paramount Network’s sister platform, Paramount+, after they have been broadcasted.
On Sunday, the episode was broadcast simultaneously on CMT, Comedy Central, MTV, MTV2, Logo, Pop, and TV Land, apart from its initial showing on Paramount Network. It also had a repeat at 11:15 p.m. ET. Meanwhile, CBS showed it an hour earlier at 10 p.m. ET, sandwiched between the two simulcast showings.
VideoAmp’s analysis dividing the viewership of Sunday into network and time slots is scheduled to be released within a few days. Nielsen’s data, which might not align with VideoAmp’s findings, should become accessible some time between Tuesday and Wednesday.
