The series has an uncanny ability to tug at my heartstrings and keep me on the edge of my seat, all while delivering a powerful commentary on family, loyalty, and the relentless march of progress.

Given the foreboding messages throughout its run, the heartrending conclusion of Yellowstone seemed unavoidable. The fifth and last season of Taylor Sheridan’s popular TV western drama series started with John Dutton’s ominous demise at the onset of Season 5B, foreshadowing a violent prelude for the following episodes. As new characters fell one by one, it was merely a question of who and when would be the next to perish.

Before examining the recently discovered bloody corpse in Yellowstone, let’s discuss how the thrilling 86-minute final episode wraps up the series and paves the way for a series of sequels produced by Sheridan. This will help viewers follow the storyline, chronology, and outcomes of the characters. Here’s a breakdown of how Yellowstone concluded its five-season journey spanning 53 episodes with some major surprises in store.

Death Has Been Looming in ‘Yellowstone’

The topic of death frequently appeared throughout the series, with John Dutton’s (Kevin Costner) unexpected demise serving as its starting point. Initially, it was thought that John Dutton had taken his own life. However, towards the end of the season, it was disclosed that John Dutton was actually murdered, orchestrated by lawyer Sarah Atwood (Dawn Olivieri). The theme of murder persisted, first with Sarah meeting her violent end in a harrowing drive-by shooting. In the next episode, we saw the tragic death of beloved rancher and Bunkhouse Boy, Colby Mayfield (Denim Richards), who was fatally struck by a horse after saving young Carter (Finn Little) from being trapped inside a horse stall.

In the atmosphere heavy with impending doom, Sheridan meticulously orchestrated a series of deaths among secondary characters, saving the most poignant and heart-wrenching demise for the grand finale. Although it wasn’t for the faint-hearted, the final farewell in ‘Yellowstone’ felt deserved, natural, and surprisingly gratifying.

Beth Sells the Ranch Back to the Reservation

Before eulogizing the dead, Yellowstone‘s unresolved storylines and plot points begin tying together. The biggest revelation comes when Beth Dutton (Kelly Reilly) agrees to sell the Dutton Family Ranch back to the Broken Rock Reservation for $1.1 million. Beth vowed to honor her father’s legacy by keeping the ranch intact and ensuring land developers don’t purchase it. To her father’s corpse, she says “You made me promise not to sell an inch, and I hope you understand that this is me keeping it. There may not be cows on it, but there won’t be condos either. We won.”

Beth’s decision to sell the ranch sparks resentment in her criminal brother, Jamie Dutton (Wes Bentley), who harbors political aspirations. When Beth vows to her deceased father, “I will avenge you,” as he is buried, viewers anticipate that Jamie will be involved in this revenge plot. Furthermore, Jamie’s girlfriend, Sarah Atwood, was responsible for John Dutton’s assassination, providing Beth with additional motivation to eliminate her brother.

Jamie’s Shocking Death

In a climactic scene, Beth accosts Jamie after John’s funeral, cornering him outside his home with a can of bear spray. The ensuing struggle is intense, and Beth reveals that she has sold the ranch to the reservation for 1.1 million dollars, causing Jamie to fly into a rage and threaten Beth with deadly intent.

In due time, Rip intervenes and rescues Jamie from Beth just when things seemed dire. Sadly, moments later, Beth fatally stabs Jamie, intensifying the Shakespearean family drama that has been unfolding since the show began. After this tragic event, Rip takes Jamie’s body to the train station, causing him to be reported missing as the series reaches its conclusion. To add to his misfortune, Jamie is wrongly accused of his father John’s death.

How ‘Yellowstone’s Finale Sets Up More Story

Although Jamie Dutton’s surprising death in the Yellowstone finale left a lasting impression, it also said goodbye to several cherished characters. For example, with John and Jamie no longer around, Kaycee Dutton (Luke Grimes) is now free from the obligation of preserving his family’s legacy, opening up opportunities for him to explore new possibilities for his family. He purchases 300 cattle and joins forces with his wife Monica (Kelsey Asbille) and son Tate (Brecken Merrill) to establish a new ranch.

In another location, Beth and Rip acquire a piece of land 40 miles from Dillon, Montana – the location for Sheridan’s newest Yellowstone spin-off titled The Madison. They bring Carter along with them, ensuring that Colby’s death was not in vain. Meanwhile, Teeter (Jennifer Landon) secures a new role at Bosque Ranch.

In the climax of Yellowstone, the new proprietors of Broken Rock dismantle the Dutton ranch. The finale of Madison, Yellowstone, links back to the prequel series, 1883, as Elsa Dutton’s (Isabel May) gravestone appears in the final scene. Instead of warning about industrialization, Elsa emerges from the ground and ends the series by delivering a narrated message through a monologue. Despite John Dutton and his forefathers’ efforts to preserve the land and thwart commercial property development, Elsa’s voice-over implies that seven generations of Dutton ranching ultimately led to what they were trying to prevent, due to human ambition and deceit.
