Yellowstone’s Luke Grimes Broke Down The Meaning Behind John Dutton’s Opinion Of Kayce, And I Really Hope He’s Able To Shake It This Season

Yellowstone's Luke Grimes Broke Down The Meaning Behind John Dutton’s Opinion Of Kayce, And I Really Hope He’s Able To Shake It This Season

As a seasoned gamer who has spent countless hours immersed in various digital worlds, I find myself deeply connected to Kayce Dutton’s character in Yellowstone. His journey mirrors that of many protagonists in games – tormented by his past, haunted by trauma, and struggling to find his place amidst chaos and conflict.

Kayce Dutton has had a tough time; he appears to be the only one among John Dutton’s children who bears the brand. His past as a soldier has left deep emotional scars, and now he’s grappling with a dilemma: family loyalty versus the ranch. Given these circumstances, it’s understandable that when Kevin Costner’s character reflects on his kids, compassion for his youngest son seems to be his predominant emotion.

As we move into the second half of Season 5 for “Yellowstone”, it’ll be intriguing to observe how these developments affect Luke Grimes‘ character. On a personal note, I’m eagerly waiting for him to break free from his father’s judgment. Keeping this in perspective, I posed a question to the actor about how his dad’s view of his children might influence Kayce’s journey ahead.

Prior to discussing Grimes’ answer, let me clarify the question I posed earlier. As I was preparing for the Yellowstone press tour, I revisited Season 5A, and a significant scene that caught my attention was a dialogue between John and Rip in Episode 5, where they spoke about Beth. In this conversation, John not only praised his daughter but also shared insights about his other sons – the late Lee, the absentee Kayce, and the controversial Jamie – expressing his feelings for them as well.

It seems there’s a special one among your children you feel a unique sense of longing for. That one, I’d say, is the one you envy.

In my conversation with the Yellowstone cast, I made sure to discuss not just the upcoming events but also delve into a point that John’s opinions towards his children seem to significantly influence their behaviors. Hence, I inquired about this particular observation during our discussion.

Luke Grimes’ response stood out to me, especially since he expressed his belief that John feels sympathy towards Kayce.

It seems to me that he feels compassion for him, given the evident impact of his past experiences abroad during war, which appear to have deeply affected him. Furthermore, if you recall, Kayce’s only notable flashback is when his mother dies, and he’s there, alone with her, witnessing her last moments as a young boy. Therefore, it’s fair to say that his life has been incredibly challenging, right? Consequently, yes, I believe he sympathizes with him because he understands it wasn’t his fault, but he carries a heavy burden of demons.

Regrettably, Kayce has been involved in some of the most gruesome scenes on Yellowstone. As Grimes pointed out, his character’s experiences of war left him shaken, the loss of his mother was deeply distressing, and overall, he’s had to endure a great deal of hardship.

Luke Grimes Told Me How Cowboy Hats Are Picked For Yellowstone Characters, And My Mind Is Blown

It’s intriguing to note that Grimes highlighted the fact that the only flashback we witness of Kayce is his mother’s demise. This underscores the deep sadness in his narrative, and it’s a point I hope will be explored further during this season.

With the anticipated debut of “Yellowstone” on the 2024 TV lineup, I’m optimistic that Kayce will manage to rise above it all, take stock of his past traumas, and truly begin to progress. Although we know Kevin Costner won’t reprise his role as John, I believe there’s a possibility that his on-screen son could perform in such a way that might alter John’s perspective of him.

In Texas resides Rip, while John is absent, leaving it probable that the management of the Montana ranch will fall upon Kayce. It would be delightful to observe more interactions between him and his siblings, as I eagerly anticipate seeing him break free from the dilemma he’s been facing about prioritizing the ranch or his family.

Luke Grimes’ character is exceptionally strong, having faced numerous hardships, yet it’s evident that John recognizes his potential. Nevertheless, his father currently feels compassion for his youngest child. Here’s to hoping Kayce manages to break free from this and truly embrace his strength and talents in the upcoming episodes of Yellowstone‘s fifth season.

It’s great news! We won’t have to wait much longer to find out if our dream comes true, as Yellowstone Season 5B debuts on Paramount Network this coming Sunday, November 10, at 8 p.m. ET. While we eagerly await the return of this gripping series about the Dutton family, you can use your Peacock subscription to revisit important scenes from previous seasons and prepare yourself for the continuation of the story.
