Yellowstone's Rip Is Literally Blowing Stuff Up In New Season 5 Video, But Sarah Atwood Gets My Vote For MVP

As a seasoned gamer of western dramas, I can say with certainty that the upcoming Season 5B of Yellowstone has my heart pounding like never before. The tantalizing new footage and the intrigue surrounding Kevin Costner’s mysterious absence have only added fuel to the fire.

For several months, news about Yellowstone Season 5 has been shrouded in secrecy, contrasting with the open publicity surrounding the backstage conflicts between Kevin Costner (who was then a star) and co-creator Taylor Sheridan. Fortunately, we now have more insights into the upcoming episodes that are expected to conclude the series (if Season 6 speculations prove true), and the thrilling new trailer primarily focuses on Cole Hauser’s Rip and Dawn Oliveri’s Sarah Atwood.

Check out the video clip below, predominantly narrated by John Dutton, as portrayed by Costner, even though there have been reports stating he didn’t resume filming for the latter part of this season. It seems these scenes might be old footage or unused scenes from the early episodes of Season 5. I hope it turns out that he filmed a few scenes towards the end, perhaps to provide his character with a fitting farewell.

And now let’s talk out some of those major highlights, shall we?

Rip Is Burning Cars And Breaking Glasses

There aren’t many TV moments that get my heart racing as much as when “Rip becomes enraged.” As soon as Hauser’s expression changes from cheerful to angry, you can tell someone is going to end up in trouble or even worse. And what makes it more intense is that his anger often goes uncontrolled in the Season 5 clips, particularly when he destroys a car whose owner remains unknown.

To tell you the truth, it wouldn’t entirely shock me if Rip himself doubted who owned the car, considering his response to Lloyd’s query regarding joining the fight. Here’s how he phrased it: “I’m not completely certain about that myself.

If we can figure out who to fight and how to fight ‘em.

As we approach the last installments of the series, it’s intriguing to note that one of the characters with questionable ethics is unsure about whom he should confront in a violent altercation.

Additionally, he makes it clear to Beth that she can’t just abandon their struggle for the ranch without consequences, or else they might lose it. A situation arises that makes him so furious he hurls a glass (likely filled with whiskey) towards the wall and into the fireplace. This action, if replicated in the car, could have sparked a massive explosion, indicating whatever incites such behavior must be extremely distressing.

Sarah Atwood Gets MVP Status For Fights With Jamie And Beth

In the fifth season, Sarah Atwood, played by Dawn Olivieri, joined the Dutton family’s ranch saga, quickly earning a reputation as someone ready to go to any lengths to achieve success. This might have felt like a sweeter personal triumph for her if Jamie hadn’t agreed to be manipulated, with the result that he could manipulate Sarah in return.

It seems she might discover some things regarding Jamie trying to manipulate her, as she retaliates aggressively during an argument by slapping him hard. It’s uncertain if there are any dominant-submissive dynamics at play, but I wouldn’t be shocked if they ended up together shortly after that violent altercation.

In Sarah’s altercation with Beth, it was clearly Beth who initiated the violence. Not only did Kelly Reilly’s character shove Sarah against a wall and grip her face during the encounter, but Beth also violently threw Sarah into a table, causing a vase to break on impact.

Here’s hoping those comprise the opening seconds of a major brawl between the two women. Not that I need to see Beth duke it out with every woman on this show, but I do love it most when her opponents are just as feisty and aggressive, so that it’s not just a one-sided victory every single time. Not that I want Beth to get beat down like she did in Season 2, but if she gets a battle scar or two, all the better.

It’s intriguing that the trailer doesn’t seem to reveal “Sarah Atwood” as a disguise, leaving no hints about my theory suggesting the Duttons have been involved in a long-term deception. However, I remain optimistic about this idea as we look forward to the western series concluding the 2024 Fall TV season.

Yellowstone Season 5B will debut on Paramount Network on Sunday, November 10.
