Yes, Twisters Made The Oscar Shortlist. Why I Think It’s A Particularly Cool Moment

As a film enthusiast who grew up in the heart of Oklahoma, the 2025 Oscars are stirring up quite a tornado of excitement within me! You see, I’ve always had a soft spot for movies that capture the essence of my home state and the grit of its people. So, when I heard that Twisters made it to the Original Song shortlist, I was as giddy as a calf at a county fair!

It’s clear that Glen Powell’s character, Tyler, encourages following one’s instincts by saying “If you have a feeling for it, pursue it!” In relation to the 2025 Oscars, there seems to be a growing affection for the movie Tiwsters, as they have added it to not just one but two shortlists. Although recognition for visual effects was anticipated, I’m particularly thrilled about the film’s unexpected nod in the Original Song category.

As excitement builds towards the 2025 award show, The Academy has given us our first hint about potential nominees this year. As Variety mentioned, these shortlists function like midterm exams for contenders vying for awards, narrowing down the pool of projects that could be nominated across various categories. Although the major categories aren’t revealed in these, one category I find intriguing within the list is Original Song.

More Information On The Original Song Shortlist

This category encompassed songs such as “Compress/Repress” from the album ‘Challengers’, “Never Too Late” from ‘Elton John: Never Too Late’, two tracks by Emilia Pérez, and songs featured in Disney’s projects, including “Beyond” from ‘Moana 2’ and “Tell Me It’s You” from ‘Mufasa’.

I strongly appreciate this musical genre for two main points. Firstly, I believe that compositions originating from artists deserve recognition and accolades. Secondly, it’s exciting because the nominees have an opportunity to showcase their talents by performing at the event, providing much-needed entertainment during the broadcast.

Circling back to the movie “Twisters,” which has been added to the Original Song list for 2024, gained this placement due to Lainey Wilson’s heartfelt ballad “Out Of Oklahoma.” This recognition is certainly something worth getting excited about!

To begin with, I must confess that the soundtrack for “Twister” is absolutely my go-to album of the year, consistently playing in my surroundings. Boasting a stellar lineup of renowned country artists, it offers an eclectic mix of tunes that truly encapsulate the essence of the genre. Moreover, these tracks not only stand out as fantastic country songs in their own right but also seamlessly complement the film’s dynamic and intense scenes. In essence, this soundtrack adds a fresh, contemporary vibe to “Twister”, making it an unforgettable listening experience for me.

When I first heard Tyler’s “Dead End Road” after being familiar with Luke Combs’ “Ain’t No Love In Oklahoma,” it significantly heightened the narrative and action within Twisters for me.

In the event that Lainey Wilson’s song is nominated for an Oscar, it underscores a poignant and introspective moment in the movie, as character Daisy Edgar-Jones’ Kate steps back into her home following a lengthy pursuit, marking her first return home.

I truly love that part because it brings about a powerful and enlightening moment for both Kate and Tyler, emotionally and scientifically speaking. The melody accentuates the significance of homecoming and belonging, and not only does it intensify the emotional impact of this instance, but it also underscores the themes of “Twisters”.

Absolutely, it’s clear that Lainey Wilson deserves an accolade from The Academy. Let’s hope and keep our fingers crossed that she will also be formally nominated.

If she is indeed participating, it would mean she’d be singing live – an experience I can assure you, you wouldn’t want to miss!

Now we’re anxiously awaiting if this project will progress further, from being on the shortlist to being nominated. Fingers crossed it does, as I eagerly anticipate seeing some recognition for Twisters during the Oscars performance and a well-deserved shout-out when I watch the awards on Hulu this year!

If the Twisters track is selected for nomination, you’ll have the opportunity to view the Oscars on ABC or by subscribing to Hulu in March 2nd. In the interim, consider revisiting the cherished legacy sequel with a Peacock subscription.
