Even though the final season of “Stranger Things” hasn’t been aired yet, Caleb McLaughlin is already prepared to deliver a chilling tale to audiences. Instead of the small screen, this time he’s venturing into the realm of audio with “Sacrilege: Curse of the Mbirwi,” an Audible Original that became available today. This marks his inaugural foray into audio dramas. Crafted by Nyasha Hatendi, known for “Casual,” the narrative centers around the Wallace family as they journey to a lavish game reserve in Zimbabwe, where spirits demand reverence and retaliate when it’s not offered.
In a new film titled “Sacrilege,” Dashon Wallace, portrayed by McLaughlin, initially resists joining his family’s vacation but ends up unintentionally violating sacred ground. This innocent action summons an ancient entity called the Mbirwi, resulting in a terrifying confrontation between supernatural forces and familial turmoil that spans a gripping 3 hours and 48 minutes. The film is presented with immersive Dolby Atmos surround sound technology. Alongside McLaughlin, “Sacrilege” features the voice talents of Jessica Mikayla, Christina Elmore, Kevin Carroll, Tapiwa Mutingwende, as well as Tongayi Chirisa from the “Mayfair Witches.
ScreenRant is pleased to present an exclusive excerpt from Sacrilege: Curse of the Mbirwi, featuring Dashon’s introduction to his “MTV Cribs-type crazy” housing and skepticism regarding “the laws of nature in this part of the world.” Listen to the full clip below:
Sacrilege: Curse Of The Mbirwi Highlights Caleb McLaughlin’s Evolution As A Performer
Leading An Audible Original Is No Ordinary Feat
In the video you see, Dashon enters a room with a thatched roof, which he terms as a “luxurious mud hut.” Despite being awestruck by the jungle environment, he expresses indifference towards his hostess’ caution about the wild animals. She emphasizes that they should take these warnings seriously (“They are not a jest,” she says), but Dashon just laughs it off. Unbeknownst to him, his disregard for her advice will soon lead to unfortunate events…
McLaughlin might have developed, both personally and as an actor, under the gaze of a worldwide audience throughout 4 seasons of “Stranger Things.” However, his work on the latest Audible Original has given him the opportunity to exercise his acting abilities in uncharted directions. Although he’s been brilliant as part of the ensemble cast while portraying Lucas Sinclair, and has played significant roles in movies like “Concrete Cowboy” and “Sacrilege,” “Sacrilege” marks his first undeniable lead role, which he carries off gracefully.
Although the clip doesn’t highlight the psychological thriller element in Hatendi’s tale, it effectively establishes the backdrop for Dashon’s lessons. The eerie journey depicted in McLaughlin’s story Sacrilege is powerfully enhanced by its rich sound design, making the possessed creatures and transforming horrors of the Zimbabwean wilderness seem incredibly real. Themes such as African-American identity, the African diaspora, survival instincts, and sacrifice are central to Sacrilege: The Curse of the Mbirwi , but this passage suggests that humor is equally crucial to the storyline.
