In addition to the concepts of interconnected universes and series films, a significant trend in the Hollywood movie business involves revamping hit animated productions as remakes. For instance, the film that dominated over Memorial Day weekend was Disney’s live-action version of Lilo & Stitch, which is a reboot of the 2002 animated film with the same title. A notable example of a highly profitable movie is the remake of The Lion King, created using photorealistic CGI animation in contrast to the original 2D animated version it’s based on. However, the director of the forthcoming remake of How to Train Your Dragon has expressed some reservations about the project.
the audience’s expectations and assumptions might overshadow the film’s merits.
For the very first time, we showed it to anyone. Frankly, I was apprehensive, not because I didn’t believe in the film itself, but because I wasn’t sure how people would respond to it. After all, they might have grown fond of the animated versions. Also, there’s a debate about whether this live-action version is necessary. Some argue that it’s too soon or that the animated movies are satisfactory enough.
The ‘How to Train Your Dragon’ Remake Will Provide More “Character Richness”
As a movie enthusiast, I found myself grappling with concerns about the filmmaking process, but director DeBlois had an intriguing approach. In his words, “It’s our job as the creative team to persuade the audience that it’s worth their time. We took various routes to add depth to characters, ramp up action, and deepen the mythology a bit.” Crafting a world in the film that felt authentic and fully fleshed out was key to keeping viewers hooked on this live-action remake.
The initial screening of the remake of “How to Train Your Dragon” took place at CinemaCon, and so far, the early responses to the movie indicate it’s a loyal adaptation. Those who have watched the film hint that some fresh plot twists have been incorporated, but whether these changes will be substantial enough for long-time fans of the animated movies is yet to be determined.
It’s worth noting that at CinemaCon, it was disclosed that a follow-up to the live-action film is underway, slated for release in June 2027. DreamWorks appears to be planning to convert the entire animated trilogy into a series of live-action movies, although it remains uncertain how well these will perform at the box office, given the high number of remakes, reboots, and sequels currently flooding the market. The most recent film in the animated trilogy, “How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World”, was released in 2019. In essence, the films have their work cut out for them to establish a place for themselves amidst this competitive movie landscape.
