As a passionate movie critic, I’ve been eagerly awaiting news about the long-delayed TV series spinoff of the beloved 1999 sci-fi comedy, Galaxy Quest. And it seems that the production, much like our intrepid crew from the NSEA Protector, refuses to give up or surrender! After years in development, it appears that Grabthar’s hammer hasn’t fallen on this project just yet, leaving us with a sliver of hope for another cosmic adventure in our future. So, fellow fans, keep your eyes peeled and stay tuned for any signs of life from the stars!
Johnson has multiple productions underway, among them are TV versions of “Galaxy Quest” and “The Holdovers.” He hinted to Deadline that they are being penned, so we’ll have to wait and see. While this news might not be groundbreaking given his lack of details about the script’s progress (the latest development was at Paramount+ in 2023), it does indicate that work is still being done on them. However, it hasn’t received official approval yet, suggesting there may still be steps to take before it takes flight.
For quite some time, the concept of a Galaxy Quest TV show has been orbiting in the cosmos, and numerous efforts have been made to bring it to life on television screens. In 2017, Paul Scheer pitched serial adventure ideas to Amazon Studios, which would continue the story from where the movie left off. Moreover, Paramount Television Studios announced in 2023 their intention to transform Galaxy Quest from a fictional show into a reality. At one point, a direct sequel was in development, but unfortunately, the untimely passing of Alan Rickman led to those plans being put on hold.
Could ‘Galaxy Quest’ Work Without the Original Cast?
Tim Allen, who played Jason Nesmith in Galaxy Quest, hinted in 2021 about the potential for a sequel without the late Alan Rickman’s character. He suggested that another member of the Galaxy Quest family might take over, and the concept could still be viable. Allen also mentioned that there is always a small flame of possibility to revive the series.
Actor Sam Rockwell, well-known for his role in Galaxy Quest as Guy Fleegman, expressed readiness for another space adventure if the opportunity arises for a sequel to the original film. He stated, “Galaxy Quest was quite fortunate for us. If there’s a Galaxy Quest sequel, we’d definitely be part of it. There were discussions about possibly creating a limited series,” he added, mentioning that Simon Pegg had even suggested helping with its development. However, it remains unofficial as to which cast members, if any, would participate in a potential revival project.
More than two and a half decades have passed since “Galaxy Quest” graced movie screens, yet it continues to be adored by sci-fi enthusiasts. Directed by Dean Parisot from a script penned by David Howard and Robert Gordon, the film follows the actors of a space opera TV show who unwittingly get involved in a genuine interstellar battle with aliens. These extraterrestrials mistakenly believe their series is a documentary and recruit them to aid them in overthrowing an oppressive regime within their solar system. Although it garnered favorable feedback from critics, the film initially slipped under the radar before earning cult status and becoming a timeless comedy masterpiece of modern times.
