‘You Lied To My Face Twice.’ A Journalist Called Out Simu Liu For Not Admitting To His Avengers: Doomsday Casting, But I Know He Wasn’t The Only One Asking

Yesterday was quite thrilling for fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe! Instead of just sending out a press release or sharing a fun teaser video, Marvel Studios decided to go all out. They conducted a live-stream for nearly six hours, gradually revealing 27 names that make up the current cast of the upcoming movie Avengers: Doomsday, and one of those names was Simu Liu.

I had the unique opportunity to live-stream the entire unveiling of the Doomsday cast (quite an unusual task), and among all the talented individuals, Simu Liu was the one who truly piqued my interest. Shang-Chi hasn’t graced our screens in live-action since his debut, so his inclusion sparked a flurry of excitement within me, as well as stirring up some curiosity among journalists who were intrigued enough to challenge Simu Liu about his evasive responses to their Doomsday questionnaires.

Simu Liu Celebrated His Inclusion In The Avengers: Doomsday Cast, And A Journalist Called Him Out

The official reveal of the Avengers: Doomsday cast had more than a few surprises, including more than a few X-Men. However, one person who was clearly very happy that his name was on the list was Simu Liu. He posted the video of his chair reveal on Instagram to prove it:

Many people reacted to Liu’s post with messages of congratulations and enthusiasm. Yet, it appears ScreenRant’s Liam Crowley, who has interviewed Simu Liu multiple times, expressed some disappointment or sense of being let down, as indicated by his comment…

you lied to my face twice.

In a playful exchange, the journalist employs strong language, yet it’s evident they were merely joking around. Rather than dismissing the comment or offering a timid apology, Simu Liu chose to reciprocate the jest by complimenting the journalist instead.

i loved your suit though 😉

In our profession, we always strive to secure significant exclusives when interviewing actors from large franchises, but more often than not, we fall short. Actors like Simu Liu are exceptionally skilled at dodging questions, making it a challenge for us to get meaningful responses.

Simu Liu Has Been Avoiding Marvel Questions A Lot Recently

In the field of entertainment news, we’re often accustomed to posing questions to actors that may not necessarily yield honest responses. We ask, and occasionally we might receive a response, but more often than not, actors are skilled at evading direct answers. It’s also true that sometimes they outright fabricate information.

Simu Liu has been doing a lot of this recently. The above case wasn’t the only time he was asked about the future of Shang-Chi and had to avoid answering. I recently caught the actor on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, and the host also dove into the deep end, asking the actor about Shang-Chi. Liu jokingly gave a robotic boilerplate non-answer before straight up saying…

I don’t know anything, no.

As a cinephile, just a couple of weeks ago I chatted with Simu Liu. It’s barely conceivable that he hadn’t figured out his role in Avengers: Doomsday until last week, but it seems much more probable that he’s been in the know for months, keeping hush about it all until the news broke loose.

It turns out that Shang-Chi’s return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) is a fact we can all rejoice about. Initially, we assumed we would have been treated to a Shang-Chi sequel much earlier, given the remarkable success of the first film. However, it seemed that the movie was missing from Marvel Studios’ official release schedule, leading some to speculate that it had been scrapped. Yet, after much evasion and uncertainty, we now have confirmation that Shang-Chi will indeed be back on our screens.
